At the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance on Sunday September 17th, 2023, Mr. Ernie Jenkins of Dresden passed away in his 61st year. Cherished son of the late Ernie Sr. and Frances Jenkins. Beloved husband and best friend of Cheri. Proud and devoted father of Ernie Jr. and his wife Julia of Chatham, and Derek and his wife Laura of Chatham. Grandpa of Koraline, and Cecelia . Loving brother of Bill Jenkins (Patsy), Debbie Ashford (Ray), Terry Jenkins (John Basden), Cindy Smith (Glenn), and Wendy Jenkins (Rene Brosseau). He will be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews, special niece Shaelyn Glassford, also his great nieces and great nephews.
It seems like everybody knows Dad, his stories, and his (sometimes inappropriate) sense of humor. Besides the Sod Farm, and Landscaping company, it is what he is most known for. Someone always has a story to share that usually starts with «I’ll never forget the time your Dad said/did (fill in the blank)»
Over the years, Dad was involved with so many different clubs, organizations, hobby groups, volunteer groups that were involved with his interests, and business relations. Too many to name, which led to many connections throughout the community.
Dad loved archery and hunting. He spent years as an active member, and a couple years as club president at Kent County Bowhunters Association.
Dad loved to fly. It was his passion in life. Anyone living in the GEAA (Greater Eberts and Appledore Area) knows this more than anybody else. He could often be seen on calm mornings or evenings buzzing around the neighborhood, keeping an eye on everything from the sky.
Dad loved to help. Whether you asked for it or not. If anyone even slightly mentioned they needed help with something, Dad would either be there himself, with the equipment to get the job done, or get what you needed through his massive web of community connections.
He spent the early part of his life playing drums. At 11 years old, he played in a band with his brother Bill, and sister-in-law Patsy, called The Ernie Jenkins Special. He was so young he had to remain on the stage during band breaks to comply with liquor laws at the time. He then played with his sister Wendy Jenkins in The Carousels, and then The Jubilaires, and Front Page News.
Dad was a maniac on a dirt bike – at least so I have heard. «Your dad would ride a wheelie all the way down the 3rd concession.» – is a statement that comes up whenever someone talks about him on a bike. He raced motocross in the late 70’s and early 80’s. He was most proud of racing at the Pontiac Silverdome in 1980.
There are so many more aspects of Dads life that I can’t even begin to touch on. I look forward to the fond memories being shared in the coming times.
