Obituary
Ernest “Chip” McKenzie was born on March 15th, 1956 in Cumberland House, SK in a small log cabin, clinic. Born to Hilliard McKenzie and Marie Louise Carriere. He made his mom trudge through the deep snow while in labour and then decided to be born breech. He grew up in Cumberland House, SK and attended Charlebois School and later left to obtain his high school diploma at LP Miller School in Nipawin, SK. From an early age, he was an avid trapper and commercial fisherman. The highlight of his trapping was winning awards for his fine furs, as well as being the president and advocate of the N90 Trappers. Chip also excelled at sports such as canoeing, curling, and hockey. He also enjoyed raising and training his dogs, partaking in sprint, sled-dog racing.
In his young adulthood, Chip met his wife Denise in The Pas, Manitoba at The Trappers Festival celebration. From there, they kept in contact and their relationship bloomed and they fell in love. Eight months later they were married on October 9th, 1982 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Cumberland House, SK. He was never whole without his soul mate, his love Denise at his side, missing her even while she was busy at work or away. They were married for nearly 42 years. They went on to raise two beautiful daughters, Trisha and Becky. Later, their sweet little granddaughter Sophine “The Boss”. Despite their many challenges in life, it only strengthened their special union and solidified their family as a whole.
Chip went on to co-own and operate the family business, “The Mohawk”. He also opened an outfitting business, “McKenzie Camp”. He also owned a housing renovation/contracting business as he was a great carpenter. He gained these carpentry skills while working for northern housing programs in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Chip was instrumental in The Delta N-90 Trappers Restoration Project in effort to restore the delta. Restoring the delta was his passion and one of the greatest accomplishments in his life. After years of hard work, he retired from business and went into early retirement due to his health conditions.
Chip was a very kind, generous, compassionate and loving person. He was always sure to include you in everything and made you feel loved and respected. He was always offering his help or advice. He was a mentor, a deep thinker and a planner. It wasn’t uncommon to see him deep in thought. He had a great sense of humour, always trying to make others laugh or tease every chance he could get. He was known to be a big annoying pest to his family. He loved joking around with the guys and was an all-around comedian, especially at the “Shop parties”. He loved to eat and cook for others. Food was his happy place whether he’s eating or bringing you food, you wouldn’t go hungry with him around.
Chip found strength in prayer. He was very devoted to his faith and had a very strong will. He was determined to live for those he loved despite his many illnesses and ailments. He was very active and it brought him down when his health wouldn’t allow him to do things in his last years.
He had a special love for his kids, wife and grandchildren and you could see that in every small act he did. His family and friends were the most important thing in his life. Chip was a very caring, loving and understanding husband, dad, grandpa “buppa”, son, uncle, brother, cousin and friend. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten. His memory will live on in those who knew and loved him.
Predeceased by son Kenneth McLeod, father Hilliard McKenzie; sisters Debbie-Anne McKenzie, Florence “Chee-Chee” McKenzie, and brother Michael “Mickey” McKenzie.
