ERNA KAMINSKI (nee SOMMERFELD)
1930 – 2024
Erna was born on June 15, 1930 in Kandien, East Prussia, Germany to parents Heinrich and Anna Sommerfeld (nee Zywietz). She was one of seven siblings including a twin brother, Kurt. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Kandien, where she later attended public school. Her childhood years were spent on the family farm. In her final years when the Alzheimer’s had taken over, she would still speak fondly of her days feeding the farm chickens.
During the war years, in 1944, Erna’s father went missing in action and was never seen again. Meanwhile in January of 1945, after being invaded by the Russian Front, she and the rest of her family were forced to temporarily flee their family farm. Upon their return, they found their beloved home was left in shambles. It was at this time that they were taken by the Russians and forced to work at a nearby community farm.
In November of the same year, they once again managed to flee, making their way through several refugee camps before finding themselves in Mecklenburg, the occupied Russian Zone of Germany. Here they found themselves united with another family from their hometown, the Titelmeiers. They remained there until the spring of 1946. It was Mr. Titelmeier, who resided in the English Zone of Germany, who procured their escape. Through some trickery and forgery of documents he managed to get both families to Salzdahlum in West Germany.
Following the war, in 1949, Erna met Heinz Kaminski. After a year’s courtship, they became engaged in 1950 and married in Salzdahlum in 1951. They then moved to Cologne where they lived until their emigration to Canada in 1953, making their new home in Kitchener. At the time they emigrated, Erna was pregnant and the journey across the ocean wasn’t the easiest thing for her. But they arrived safely and in January 1954 they were blessed with their first child, a daughter, Margot. Six years later in February of 1960 they were further blessed with a son, Frank.
Their first owned home was on Bingeman St. in Kitchener followed by a home on Plaza Court until ultimately, in 1966, they worked together to build their final home in Lakeside Village in Waterloo, where they lived for over 50 years until 2018.
Erna lived a long and fulfilling life in their new home. She worked for many years at the Kitchener Farmers Market and also at Piller Meats. At home, her gardening skills were exceptional and their home always had some of the loveliest flower beds and stunning rose bushes in the area.
She was an excellent cook and nothing pleased her more than to create a lovely meal complete with several delicious desserts for her full and extended family at each and every family gathering.
Erna felt truly blessed in the following years with the addition of two grandsons: Matthew, followed by Mark. That blessing passed into yet another generation with the addition of two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Khloe.
Erna passed away peacefully on September 13, 2024 in her 95th year at AgeCare Long Term Care Residence in Elmira. She will be greatly missed by her loving family and friends, and will always be remembered as a kind, calm and lovely soul who valued and loved her family above everything else.
