It is with great sadness that the family of Erick Kenneth Baillie announces his passing on December 27th, 2023 at the age of 83. Erick died on his own terms… in his own bed… in his own abode… in his sleep. He was so lucky to have his beloved daughter, Alex, spend so much time with him, especially over the Christmas season and his last few days. Never afraid of death – he just didn’t want to be around when it happened.
He was truly one for the ages and will be missed by the many who spirits were always lifted by his presence.
Erick was the first child of Muriel and Andrew Baillie. His father was in the Royal Artillery during World War II and defended London in the blitz. He was captured in Timor and spent three and a half years as a Japanese POW working on the Burma Railway line. So, Erick was raised alone by Muriel in his early years. Schooling in Glasgow included Hutcheson’s Boys Grammar School. He assumed the lead role when the family moved to Canada after his father’s death in 1965.
In his day, Erick was an avid golfer, which became the center stone of his life. He played in many top amateur tournaments in Canada, the US, the UK and Europe. He was a club champion at Rosedale Golf Club in Toronto, a member of the R&A in Saint Andrews and loved going down to Redtail in Port Stanley with friends at every opportunity.
Erick’s professional career ranged from being a cartoonist, selling Aston Martin’s and holding senior executive marketing positions for major global advertising firms including Young and Rubicam, Doyle, Dane, Bernbach and Ferrero in Italy. His major clients included Cadbury Chocolate, Tic Tac Mints and lastly, The Hudson’s Bay Company.
Erick was a man’s man with movie star good looks who loved all sports, especially golf and football (soccer). Every July he was up before dawn to watch all stages of the Tour de France. He never missed a shot played in the Ryder Cup.
He was always entertaining, the life of the party, extremely generous, full of stories and jokes. A magnificent raconteur. Often wrong, but never in doubt. While his health deteriorated in later years he never complained and was content with his life.
He leaves behind his beloved daughter, Alex, his two brothers, Alistair and Ian and step-sister Pauline.
A celebration of life will be held at Morley Bedford Funeral Home, 159 Eglinton Avenue West on Sunday, January 28th, 2024 from 11 am to 1 pm.
