Obituary of Enid Gladys Rita Wood
Enid Rita Wood died peacefully on May 24, 2023, in the RK MacDonald Nursing Home in Antigonish. She was 89 years old, lovely to be around until the end.
Enid was born in Noddy Bay, in a remote part of northern Newfoundland. She attended a one-room schoolhouse, where she showed promise and was encouraged to become a teacher. After teaching in St. John’s for a while, she decided it was not for her! She went back to St. Anthony, where her family was located, and met her husband-to-be, Jack Wood, who was working on the American radar base there. Together they headed for the bright lights of Montreal, where she got a job as a hospital medical secretary and raised two daughters.
After a short stint in Ottawa, Enid and Jack moved to Antigonish where they lived happily for over 40 years, and worked at St FX until retirement. Her daughter Christine also relocated to Antigonish, so she had the pleasure of seeing two of her four grandchildren grow up nearby.
Enid was known as a great cook, and worked her way through most of the recipes in Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking, which delighted the family and friends who got to enjoy her meals. She was also an avid reader, possessed a broad range of knowledge, and always greeted you with a ready smile.
Enid is predeceased by her husband Jack Wood, her parents, an infant brother, her brother Lewis Elms and sister Kay Kelle. She is survived by her devoted daughters Jacqueline Wood and Christine MacGillivray, her son-in-law Joe MacGillivray, grandchildren Breagh and Kyle MacGillivray, and Jacob and Katya Wood-Chvalkovsky. She will be missed by her sister Alice Gere and husband Stan; sister Jean Davis and husband George, and by her brother Jack Elms.
Thank you to the many caregivers who assisted our mother at the RK, as well as Mary Baxter, who was dedicated to her before and after her move to the RK.
There will be a private viewing. A public memorial service will be held in MacIsaac Funeral Home on June 1, 2023 at 3 pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the MS Society.
