Obituary for
Enia Maria DiGiulio (Federico)
It is with great sadness that the family announces the peaceful passing of Enia Maria DiGiulio on Monday March 11, 2024 in her 100th year, in the presence of her loving family.
Enia was born on December 11, 1924 in Navelli, Italy, the youngest child and only daughter of Elvira and Marco Federico. She worked on the family farm and helped at home until she married Venturino DiGiulio on December 29th, 1949. They had their son Joe and Enia emigrated with Joe on a ship to Halifax to join Venturino in Canada, arriving by train on a very snowy and cold day in Timmins on December 29th, their 3rd Wedding Anniversary. It took her a while to get over that shock. They welcomed their daughter Vilma soon after and they began to make a life for themselves.
Enia was a skilled seamstress, making her own clothes and her children’s for many years and took pride in her appearance and her family’s. Her hands were seldom still as she crocheted fine, intricate doilies and tablecloths, and afghan blankets. She knitted sweaters, hats and mitts for her children and grandchildren. Her other specialty was making large embroidered pictures of beautiful pastoral scenes that adorn the walls of her living room.
Enia expressed her love for her family through her daily and holiday Italian cooking. Making home-made pasta (especially gnocchi) and sauce was a family affair with everyone participating in the production line in the basement- needing the dough, rolling it out and twisting it “just like this”. The tomatoes were milled by hand until you couldn’t turn it anymore and passed it onto the next in line to continue. Everything had to be done “precisely” to pass the Enia test or else… Her Christmas Cookies are legendary. Starting in November, Enia made dozens of the most delicious different varieties with multitudes of each.
They were one of the first families to join the Italian Dante Club and were very active members. Enia was on the Women’s Bocce Team and excelled at the game. She went with her dear friends to all the Women’s Yearly Conferences to Thunder Bay, Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury amid much singing and laughter. Enia and Venturino attended all the dinner dances, especially Abruzzi Night, with their friends and family.
Enia is survived by her son Joe DiGiulio and his wife Fiona, daughter Vilma Maxwell and her husband Ron, her granddaughters and spouses Amanda Maxwell and Rej Guillemette, and Jennifer Maxwell Lamothe and Jamie Lamothe. Enia loved her family dearly and all of her great friends, especially her dear friend Loretta.
Enia is predeceased by her husband Venturino, her parents Elvira and Marco Federico, her brothers and their wives, Ercolino and Josephine, and Silvio and Antonina.
The family would like to thank the Cochrane District EMS Paramedics for their gentle care, the proficient and compassionate Timmins Hospital Emergency Team of: Dr. Olivier Umuhire, Dr. Munazza Bakht, all of the Nurses, and Social Worker Theresa. We thank Father John Lemire for providing comforting prayers. We thank all the many Care Partners PSW’s who cared for our Mother throughout the years, with sincere thanks and gratitude to Darla and Carol, whose caregiving skills and cheerful dispositions brightened Enia’s days with lots of fun and laughter.
The funeral service will be held at 1:30 pm on Friday, March 22nd from the Miron-Wilson Funeral Home chapel (Fr. John Lemire officiating) followed by Interment at Timmins Memorial Cemetery. A lunch reception will follow at the Miron-Wilson Funeral Home for family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Timmins and District Hospital Foundation would be greatly appreciated. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm on Thursday, March 21st at the MIRON-WILSON FUNERAL HOME, Cremation and Reception Centre, 150 Balsam St. S., Timmins.
