Emma Lillian Shaw
1939-2024
It is with great
sadness that we announce the passing of Emma Lillian Shaw, 85, of
Debert, formerly of Port Williams. Emma passed away peacefully with
loving family by her side, on Thursday, May 23, 2024 in Shannex
– Debert Court.
Emma was born, January
5, 1939 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. She grew up in
Charlottetown and spent her early years and summers on the farm in
Gladstone. A daughter of Percy and Lillian Sharam, she was deeply
loved by her siblings, Clara Elizabeth, Joan and Henry, along with
many cousins, aunts and uncles and grandparents. Family meant the
world to her. She graduated from Colonel Grey High School, after which
she followed in the footsteps of her sisters and aunts by becoming a
Registered Nurse. She did her training at the PEI School of Nursing,
graduating in 1960. Mom loved her nursing classmates and looked
forward to summertime gatherings with them that have spanned the last
60 plus years. In the fall of 1961, Mom decided to go to Acadia
University to study for a year. It’s there that she met her
only love, Murray Shaw. They got married on November 24, 1962 and
began their lives together. They were blessed with four children.
Because of Murray’s job as a pastor, they lived in various
communities all around Nova Scotia, before settling in Port Williams
in 1980. Emma was a woman of great faith and a prayer warrior.
Everywhere she went she found those who needed prayer and by praying
with and for them helped them discover the reality of God’s love. She
had the most beautiful smile, the kind that spread to her eyes and
made them twinkle. She was the greatest encourager, truly one of her
greatest gifts. A few moments spent with her, listening to her words
of encouragement and you felt like you could tackle almost anything.
Emma loved fun, she loved roller coasters, she loved to joke and was
always quick to laugh. You could see the joy in her green eyes
whenever she was having a good time. She loved the Blue Jays and
playing cards, especially Rook. She loved to go for long drives in the
car with Murray. She loved to be in her garden, it brought her so much
joy to just work away at it. She could make just about anything bloom
and grow that she planted. She loved spending time at the cottage on
PEI, where dear friends and family from near and far would gather,
spending precious time together. It was filled with potlucks and
laughter, singsongs, games, tea parties, celebrations of all kinds and
the most beautiful sunsets. Emma loved her family and devoted her life
to caring for them. Anytime spent with her children or grandchildren
was always very special to her.
Emma was a loving wife
for over 61 years to Reverend Murray Shaw of Port Williams; mother of
Michael (Rachel) Shaw, New Minas; Nicole (David) Huisman, Vineland,
Ontario; and Lori (Chris) Grund, Truro. She was beloved Grammie to
Daniel, Caleb and Luke Shaw, Nathan Huisman and Olivia, Lily and
Sophie Grund; sister to Joan (Miltie) MacKay, and Henry (Lynn) Sharam
and a very special aunt to many nieces and nephews. She was a loyal
and loving friend to many.
In addition to her
parents, Percy and Lillian (Cook) Sharam, she was predeceased by her
son, Robbie; a baby sibling at birth, and her sister, Clara Elizabeth
(John) Llewellyn.
The family would like
to express their deepest love, respect and admiration for the entire
staff at Debert Court. Their loving care and kindness was felt every
day. We will never be able to truly articulate our appreciation for
them. Thank you for loving Mom, which extended to the rest of us. We
will never forget you. xoxo
