It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and Nonie. Emma Marie Ficek, age 94 years. Just nine days short of her 95th birthday, passed away unexpectedly on October 22nd, 2023, at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre’s Emergency Ward in the company of her son Christopher. Emma was born on October 31st, 1928, in Fort William, ON and grew up on a farm just outside of the city as part of a large family with seven siblings. For many years she and her family owned and operated several successful grocery stores and butcher shops in the city’s East End such as the East End Co-op.
Emma met her future husband Anthony (Tony) Ficek in Murillo Ontario, and their life-long adventure began. Shortly before they planned to get married, they were pulled apart as Tony was called to serve as a pilot with the Royal Canadian AirForce in WWII. Thankfully he returned safe and sound and they began building their life here in the Lakehead. They were married in 1948 and spent nearly 53 years together until Tony passed in 2001. Together they worked side by side for many years in various endeavours, they operated Thunder Bay Fresh Eggs, managed commercial farm properties, and volunteered at the West Arthur Community Centre to name a few of the long running activities they shared. Throughout her life Emma was a family farmer, butcher, politician, commercial farm operator, businesswoman and community volunteer. She also served as President of the Royal Canadian Legion -Ortona Branch for many years. And, of course the best storyteller ever!
Emma’s greatest passion were her gardens. She toiled relentlessly for decades sun-up to sun-down creating the incredible masterpieces that surrounded her home. Her gardens were featured on the Thunder Bay Garden Tour several times and she obtained the recognition of “Master Gardener” for her accomplishments. Right up to her final day, she was coaching Cheryl on how to prepare the gardens for winter to ensure a successful spring bloom.
Above all else, the most important thing to Emma was her family. She loved and cared for each one of us with all of her heart, her granddaughters Sarah and Kate, her daughter-in-law Cheryl and her beloved son Christopher. Emma would light up at the sound or sight of her granddaughters throughout her entire life, they always held an extra special place in her heart. Her home was always the hub for after-school snacks, great family dinners and warm welcoming arms with a solution to every problem life threw at the family, big or small.
Emma will be forever missed by her family. We will miss her endless energy, caring ways, awesome food, stories of the good-old-days, and can-do attitude. She welcomed everyone into her home with a bright cheery smile and never let you leave without a special treat in your hand. Emma loved sitting outside in the sunshine admiring her many flower gardens, talking about the weather, and feeding the birds.
She will be Forever Loved and Forever Missed
Funeral services will take place at Holy Family Church at 12:30PM Saturday, October 28th, 2023, followed by a reception in the Church Hall. Visitation will be held an hour prior to service. A graveside service will take place at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
