It is with sadness but a sense of peace that we announce the passing of Emma Beitel.
Emma was born near Bayard on April 29, 1932. She was the fourth of six children born to Albert and Katie Beitel.
She met Martin at a family wedding, and they were married on April 16th, 1952.
Together they raised three children Randy, Brian (Kim) and Linda. They have six grandchildren: Jackie (Steve) Kilgour, Stacey (Jordan) Musleh, Lindsay (Brandon) Watson, Brittany (Corey) Schaefer, Shawn Beitel and Jeff Beitel. They also have 12 wonderful great grandchildren: Logan, William, Spencer, Henry, Harlow, Emmett, Charles, Elijah, Grayson, Hunter, Alexi and Hazel.
She was predeceased by her husband Martin and great grandchildren Max, Cooper, Sloane and Lennox.
They started farming on the Beitel family farm near Spring Valley and in 1957 they bought land north of Moosomin.
Farm life allowed her to provide for the family, to keep the freezers stocked full of a years’ worth of meat, vegetables, pies and fruit. Planting, weeding and harvesting a huge garden was part of her life in the summer. We remember big tubs of peas we had to help shell, picking corn when it was at its sweetest, pails of cucumbers ready to be made into dills. Raising chickens, gardening, canning and pickling kept her busy from dawn to sunset.
Yet she always found the energy to plant many flowers: peonies, dahlia, sweet peas, lupins, gladiolas and petunias. One year, a neighbour convinced her to enter her flowers into the local fair and she came away with many ribbons. She was also a member of the Hilburn Homemakers club for years.
She was famous for her great home cooked meals – dinner buns, cabbage rolls, poppyseed roll and dill pickles. Together with her mom Katie, they would hand stretch homemade phyllo pastry over the length of the table and make pans of apple strudel.
She was a full-time participant at harvest time but always took time between driving truckloads of grain to read a novel – a few times getting so engrossed in her book that Martin would be waiting impatiently with a combine full of grain.
In 1979 they sold the farm, retiring in Moosomin where they lived for 23 years. In 2000, they made the move to Regina.
She and our father instilled a strong work ethic and she had always had high expectations that we further our education.
To mom, her family was what mattered the most. Her children and grandchildren were her greatest source of pride. Her face would always light up at the sight of her grandchildren or great-grandchildren.
Her biggest challenge came in the last years of her life when her memory failed.
Thank you, Mom, for your commitment to our family, and your unconditional love and support. A New Journey begins and in Gods own time we will meet again. Rest in peace. We can no longer see you with our eyes, but we will keep you in our hearts forever.
