Our family lost this beautiful woman yesterday: Colin and Maureen’s mother, Grandmother to Emma, Gregory, Iain, Hailey, Oliver and Riley and our father Allan’s love of his life. Their devotion to each other was an inspiration: not just loving but in love. Their love and caring for each other was obvious to the very end. Mum had a wicked sense of humour like when a guest put shaving cream in her face and that night found that Mum had sewn the bottom of her nighty shut. If you left the table at a restaurant, you had to check that the top of the salt shaker wasn’t loosened when you got back.
Elspeth was fascinated by the world and dreamed of being an archaeologist. She was a huge auto racing enthusiast. She dreamed of owning a Morgan or MG, having driven in many and when she learned to drive at around 45 years old and was bold enough to go with a stick shift.
She loved animals: not only her pets but strays and injured animals. Her passion for birds and photography was so strong that she would do stakeouts for hours in a car in the driveway, positioned to get a closer shot of the birds. Elspeth worked for years at Sears handling the calls that others couldn’t, when the person phoning was too belligerent on the phone (having not plugged in the new fridge they’d bought) and always calmed the situation in her inimitable manner.
Elspeth volunteered for years at Lisaard house hospice, having seen the care her mother received in a Scottish hospice. A constant powerhouse of energy and determination, always stylish and graceful, even in declining health, she adored her family and friends, working on scrapbooks and genealogy. In the end she said she had so much more to do. Our hearts are broken but it was a kind and gentle end at Innisfree House after 91 years and the good memories are strong. Dad lives on knowing that he was her hero, friend, lover and soul mate.
Our sincerest thanks to the extraordinary people in community services, Cambridge Memorial Hospital and Innisfree House hospice for the love and care that they’ve shown her and our family.
