Obituary of Elmer Eugene Scribner
It is with broken hearts that the family of Elmer E. Scribner, husband of the late Joan Scribner (Beyea), announces his peaceful passing on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at Kingsway Care Centre. Born on December 22, 1934, in Hampton, New Brunswick, he was the son of the late Alfred and Lilian (Smith) Scribner, and the last surviving member of his siblings.
Elmer and Joan were married on September 14, 1979. They shared many adventures and cherished beautiful memories together. Elmer found great joy in nature and adventures. Whether he was fishing, hunting, snowmobiling or out on his ATV, there was always a story and laughter. Some of his favorite and most memorable adventures were moose hunting in Newfoundland, and Elk hunting on horseback in Alberta with friends and family.
Over the years, in between work, he enjoyed spending time with his nephew, the late Les Lamb, hanging out in his garage, swapping stories, and watching him race his stock car. It always brought a smile to his face. Elmer had many hobbies and interests throughout his lifetime, including his “friendly fire” lively Crokinole tournaments played during the winter with family and friends. Throughout the summer months, he could be found in the large vegetable garden, pulling horse trailers to shows around the province, camping with Joan in their trailer in Sus and enjoying the local stock car races. He also enjoyed watching the Kentucky Derby and the jumping competitions at Spruce Meadows.
Elmer, who was lovingly referred to as Papa to his family, was well known for his famous pancake breakfasts on Sunday, especially when family were visiting from out of town. It was not a regular pancake breakfast, but one that consisted of venison, moose meat (which was in the slow cooker for 24 hours prior), bacon, sausage, eggs, and coffee with a little Baileys.
Elmer was a successful, well known, and respected business owner of Hammond River Construction for over 45 years, where he excelled in drywall and painting and mentored many along the way.
He attended the Hammond River Anglican Church, and was a lifetime member of the Hammond River Angling Association as well as Fundy Riders Snowmobile Club.
Elmer is survived by his two daughters Elaine (Timothy) and Twilah (Mike); stepchildren: Kevin (Bonnie), Cynthia (Graham), Susan (Robert), Krista (Randy), Jill and Robin (Ron); grandchildren Erica and Tara; step-grandchildren: Ryan, Ashley, Drea, Braden, Megan, Brittany, Stephanie, Colin, Kayleigh, Connor, Alisyn, Noah and Angelus; step-great-grandchildren: Jaxton, Kade, Easton, Oliver, Thane, Adaelia, Anson and Lincoln; as well as several nieces, nephews and friends.
Besides his parents and wife Joan, Elmer was predeceased by his sisters Bertha, Mable, Vivian and Hattie; brothers Louis and Kenneth and his grandson Gregory Halpin.
Elmer lived a long and wonderful life. He had many great friends that he made laugh and smile along the way. He will be sadly missed and always remembered.
The family would like to thank his caregivers, friends, and family, that have helped during these last few years and the visits that kept him going. Special love and hugs to Krista, Robyn, and Kevin for their immeasurable dedication and support, and were always there for him. All that love did not go unnoticed.
Resting at Kennebecasis Community Funeral Home, 152 Pettingill Road, Quispamsis, (506-849-2119) where friends and family are invited to gather to celebrate Elmer and Joan’s life on Saturday, May 27, 2023, from 12-3 PM. A private family graveside service will take place in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Hammond River.
