BOCHERT, Elmer Carl Gustave
June 9, 1925 – March 4, 2024
We regret to announce the passing of Elmer (El) Carl Gustave Bochert on March 4, 2024 in his 99th year.
He is survived by Nelda (nee Ott) (Nel), his loving wife of just shy of 78 years. Elmer and Nelda became life partners when they married on June 12, 1946.
Loving father of Diane Moore (Joe), Lois Hotte (Garry) and his son Earl (Lianne Johnston) who predeceased him November 29, 2020. He was the most treasured Grandpa to granddaughters, Tina Humphries (Shane), Tanya Caesar (Jason) and Jodi Moore (Al Perez). He was the best Opa to great granddaughters Samantha and Alyx Caesar, and Siara and Josclyn Humphries. Predeceased by parents Charlie and Elsie Bochert and sister Erna Heideman (Raymond). Elmer also leaves behind many cherished extended family and friends.
Elmer loved the land and started farming at a very young age which continued into his early eighties on the family homestead in Grattan Township. If you were lucky enough and he didn’t see you coming, you’d catch him ploughing the fields with his horses singing for all that was in him! El could be spotted at every Santa Claus parade with his tilted hat and prized team of horses. A family favourite was the annual Boxing Day sleigh ride.
He was well known throughout the Valley for calling squares and singing some good old country and western songs. In fact, during Cobden’s Grand Ole Opry he was Wilf Carter during which he came riding into the arena on a large white horse, cowboy hat on and guitar in hand!
Elmer loved playing euchre with family and friends. If you didn’t see him playing cards at the Legion, you probably saw him there with Nel dancing the night away.
In later years, El and Nel retired to Fairfield’s in Eganville. There they enjoyed meeting new people and teasing all the workers – never complaining – just taking what life had to offer. The PSW’s were often serenaded by an old song, calling off a square or throwing them off by speaking to them in German!
He was truly a family man and for that his family reaped the benefits. He was always there for all of them, with his very large hands and those loving arms giving the best hugs ever!
He had a very strong faith and was a lifelong member of Grace Lutheran Church Eganville. His spirit of kindness was showered on many over the years. He would drop everything to help his family, neighbour or a friend.
But of all his passions, his number one was his love for Nelda.
Thank you to the home and community care support services provided by Champlain Health Services. Thank you for the spiritual care provided by the many pastors of Grace Lutheran Church over the years, most recently Pastor Ralph. The family would also like to extend a special thank you to the amazing staff at Fairfield’s Senior Living and extra appreciation for the unwavering support provided by the PSW’s who cared for El with love daily, their thoughtfulness will not soon be forgotten. Additional thank you to the Renfrew Victoria Hospital 2nd floor nurses and doctors that cared for him during his final days showering him with compassion and kindness.
Elmer’s care has been entrusted to the Zohr Family Funeral Home. To honour the family’s wishes a private ceremony will be held at a later date.
