The Milkman’s Last Stop
It is with heavy hearts that we must announce the passing of Ellwyn Douglas Campbell on May 13, 2024. Ellwyn ( “Moe”, “Big Al”, “Hun”, “Papa”, “Pops”) is survived by his wife, Gail Campbell, his children Heather Campbell (Rudy), Jamie Almas (Dee), Stephen Almas and Susan Duguay, his grandchildren McKaila, Abby M, Abby B, Abby E (that’s right, ‘the 3 Abbys’) Griffin, Pearson and Ella, his sister Ellen Campbell, sister-in-law Judy Cook, nephew Robert Campbell (Barbara) and their children, Jack and Oliver, as well as his cousins that he so very much adored. Ellwyn is predeceased by his parents, John E. Campbell and Mary Campbell as well as his brother, Donald Campbell. Ellwyn was a life-long resident of Niagara-on-the-Lake, a former member of the Lion’s Club and the Niagara-on-the-Lake Golf Club. You must know that even with his passing, Ellwyn will be part of all our lives and the Niagara community forever.
Ellwyn and Gail were inseparable for more than four decades. They lived the sweetest love story that is a true rarity in these times. Their genuine display of care and affection for one another serves as a wonderful lesson to us all. Whether a son, husband, brother, father, grandfather, uncle, great uncle, friend, co-worker, or fellow golfer, Ellwyn will always be remembered as a kind, quiet and gentle person. Even in his passing, we are so very comforted by the peaceful calm that defined his life.
We respected Ellwyn as a role model to follow in his example. He touched each of us in ways that will pass to next generations. He made our lives better and this world a happier place. Dare say there was no one who could speak an unkind word about the man who never spoke an unkind word. He loved his family, friends, sports, and his big comfortable reclining chair. He was born into the dairy business (Campbell’s Dairy, Queen Street, Niagara-on-the Lake) and finished his career retiring from Avondale Dairy on Stewart Road. To us, Ellwyn Campbell was, and always will be, the greatest milkman.
Our family are grateful for the excellent care and compassion that Ellwyn received from Personal Support Worker “Ivy”, Caregiver “Lori”, Nurse “Colleen” and the professional staff at Royal Rose Place. We are thankful that he and Gail were together during one of the hardest journeys they ever had to make.
A cremation has taken place. A private family service was always Ellwyn’s request. However, he truly appreciated those memorable and happy times that brought us all together. Accordingly, in honour of our Greatest Milkman, Ellwyn Campbell, a special day for family, friends, former co-workers, and any Professional Golf Champions to gather and remember him has been planned. Please join us at Club Roma, 125 Vansickle Road, St. Catharines on Saturday, June 15th, 2024, between 12 pm – 4 pm to celebrate Ellwyn’s life.
