Ellwood Allen Grunerud born Sept. 1, 1934 in Broderick Saskatchewan, entered into rest April 16, 2023 in Castlegar BC, having been blessed with 88 years of good life!
At the age of 5, along with his parents and younger brother the family relocated to BC, settling first in Creston, then to Nelson where he attended Willow Point School near where his dad was a groundskeeper at the Blaylock Estate. The family moved to Castlegar where his dad found work at Cominco Fertilizer Operations. Ellwood attended Brilliant school then Stanley Humphries where he wanted to take additional Math courses, but was denied so he quit school and went to Cominco in Trail where he completed his Machinist Apprenticeship. Due to his excellent Drafting skills, he worked on the Design office as well as Machining. Leaving for Celgar Pulp when the Mill opened in Castlegar, and seeing the Mill expansion/modernization project where his favorite daughter worked for a couple years, even bumming rides home with her, and after 33 years in the Machine shop he retired Jan. 1, 1994, which would have been 30 years of retirement this coming January. His proudest accomplishment was building the family home where the 4 children were raised, and Mom & Dad lived in for 58 years.
Whitey as he was known to many of his friends in his younger years played Fastball and Lacrosse, always enjoyed Sports, especially watching his children and Grandchildren play the games they loved. He loved fishing, camping with friends and was very proud of his garden, the best Tomatoes and Cucs. Canning fruits and vegetables with Mom were Fall projects. Chopping veggies for Dinner, or fruit for a snack was done with precise accuracy.
Travel involved a trip to Norway and Sweden, his Scandinavian Heritage which he talked about frequently. Grunerud Family reunions in Outlook Sask. and Coeur d’Alene Idaho were regularly attended and the Ferry trip up the Inside Passage with Mom, brother Ken and his wife Joanne.
Retirement years brought him enjoyment watching hockey or his favorite ball team, or just reading a book. Crosswords and Music were also favorite pastimes. Working with his hands is what he loved, perfectionist he was when creating something on his Lathe, or making something out of wood.
Many family pets over the years, but his all-time favorite was Reba, a Wolf Malamute cross, a beautiful gentle giant.
He also volunteered in the Community, from being one of the few men who climbed the wooden beams during the construction of the Pioneer Arena, Minor Hockey President and Recreation Commissioner.
This proud Viking was predeceased by his son Russell, parents Lawrence and Muriel, in-laws Charles and Frances Guesford, younger brother Ken, sister-in-law Joanne, brother-in-law Don, nephew Marvin.
Ellwood is survived by wife of 65 years Geraldine, son Barry, daughter Karen (Bob) Gretchen and their children Tyler (Kaity) and Kelli. Son Cal (Maryanne) and their children Trace (Jessica), Kyrstan (Ramon), Garth (Elodie) and 3 Great Grandchildren, Mattis, Elsie and Aksel. Nephews Terry and Steve and their families as well as many long time Family friends.
Thank You for the visits, flowers, food, phone calls and condolences, much appreciated.
We will fondly remember “Grampa” for his stories, knowledge, his books of many things and “That mashed potatoes need Garlic, and Caesar Salad need MORE Garlic!”
Celebration of Life to be held Friday May 12, 11AM Castlegar Legion 248 Columbia Ave.
