Ella Hawrelko
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ella Hawrelko at the age of 87 years.
Ella will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by daughters, Lynne and Estrella; son-in-law, Gary Schesnuk; grandsons, Ryan (Sacha), Mark and David Schesnuk, great-grandsons, Ivan and Miles; sister, Shirley (Ron); brother, Herb (Marjorie); and her nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, John, in 2019.
Ella was born in 1935, in Lamont, AB, to parents Mary and Steve Nimchuk. At the age of 5, she moved with her parents to Egremont where she attended elementary school. She completed junior and senior high school in Radway and Redwater.
It was while working at her father’s small grocery store in Egremont that she met and was courted by her future husband, John Hawrelko, a schoolteacher in Redwater. Ella and John married in 1955 and made their home in the communities where John taught school: Thorhild, Fort Saskatchewan and Redwater. It was in Redwater where Ella and John lived the majority of their lives and raised their family.
Following marriage, Ella worked for a time as a bank clerk and then settled into life as a wife, mother, homemaker, and community volunteer. As a volunteer, Ella helped sustain the Redwater Community Golf Club and Curling Club for a decade or more and invested 20 plus years in various positions with the Redwater Health Centre Auxiliary. In the 1970s, Ella worked alongside her husband as an administrator for the Redwater News; and, from 1976 to 1994, she managed the Golden Villa senior’s apartments.
As a mother and grandmother, Ella was regularly seen in the stands, cheering on the athletes in her family, and always sitting proudly in school auditoriums, taking in family performances. She was a competitor in her own right in the bowling alley and curling rink, on the golf course, and at agricultural fairs. And while her preferred card game may have been poker, she rode a winning streak playing military whist all the way to the 2006 Canada Senior’s Games in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba.
She most enjoyed, though, spending time with family and friends – around the kitchen table, out on the back deck, at a campfire on the farm, or at a Hawaiian pool-side happy hour.
The last song of the opera has been sung. It was aria of service to the community, laughter with friends, love and devotion to family.
Ella’s family wishes to thank staff, residents and friends at Shepherd’s Care Vanguard and Capital Care Dickinsfield for the care and companionship extended to her these past four years.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, June 24, 2023, at 1 p.m. at Park Memorial Chapel, 9709 – 111 Avenue, Edmonton.
