Obituary for Elizabeth (Beth) Irene Whittaker

Beth passed away peacefully at home in her 99th year with her grandnephew Kevin and her caregivers at her side. She was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Irene Whittaker, and her brothers, John and Donald Whittaker. She is survived by her seven nieces and nephews: David, Murray, Elizabeth (Beth), Brian, John, Diane, and Mark, and their families.
Beth lived a full and active life. She was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Her father was co-owner of a camp on an island in Lake of the Woods in northwestern Ontario, and consequently she and her brothers spent the summers of their formative years exploring the outdoors. This had a profound influence on them, creating a lifelong love of nature, adventure, and physical challenge. When Beth was 12 the family moved to Calgary. After high school, Beth obtained a Bachelor of Science from the University of Alberta in Edmonton and a Masters in Public Health from the University of Toronto. Her first job after that took her to Vancouver and she never moved away. Most of her working career was spent in laboratory medicine.
Beth loved travel, hiking, wild and domestic plants, rock hunting, textile art, history, genealogy, mystery novels, and food. Her first big international trip was in 1950 and saw her take a year off to go around the world. From then on, she travelled at every opportunity. She took university courses in botany as a mature student and was active for many years in the botany section of Nature Vancouver. She was a founding member of the North Shore Hikers and was president of that organization in the 1970’s. She volunteered for many years with the Trans Himalayan Aid Society and travelled several times to that region of the world. She did extensive genealogical research of our family, spending time in England and Ireland. In her later years, she was a regular participant in activities at Brock House. Her home was adorned with many of her own works of needlepoint and other textile art and many international treasures.
Beth followed her heart and her passions and forged a path in life which was unusual for a woman of her generation. All along the way, Beth made many lasting friendships and left a mark on the many organizations she supported.
Our family is grateful for the wonderful care she received from KARP home care. The family has had two private gatherings, one in Vancouver and one in Calgary. Her remains have been buried in Calgary with her brothers and parents.
