TREACY, Eleanor (nee Hurley) –
Eleanor passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Monday, March 6, 2023, at the age of 91. Eleanor has been reunited with her beloved husband, Michael Treacy; and those kin who have passed before her. Loving mother to Madeleine (the late Eamonn) O’Loghlin, Edmund (Dawn), Frank (Mary), and Michael (Evelyn); and doting nana and granny to her cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dear sister to the late Richard (Anne), Noreen (the late David) Corcoran, the late Teddy, John (Madeleine), the late Mary (Sean) Collins and Michael (Ann).
Born in Ballineen, County Cork, Ireland, Eleanor began married life in Toronto with her husband, Michael, in the early 1950s. After decades operating small businesses alongside her husband, she and Michael retired to Omemee, where they spent a number of peaceful years together.
Eleanor was a compassionate person who loved her family above all else. One of her greatest joys was being an integral part of her grandchildren’s (and great-grandchildren’s) lives. Eleanor always enjoyed a laugh and a chat about the latest news. She was worldly and opinionated, with a sharp wit and great sense of humour. She always knew how to bring a smile to one’s face and was adored by all who met her. She valued education immensely and ensured it flowed down through the generations. She was a fiercely independent woman who lived life on her own terms, and inspired those around her to do the same.
Over the years, Eleanor’s fiery spirit and infectious personality left an indelible mark on all who knew her. She will be deeply missed by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends and other loved ones in Canada and abroad (Ireland, the USA, and Barbados).
Although Eleanor is no longer with us, her legacy will live on through the memories she created and the lives she touched. She was a true original, and her spirit will continue to inspire us all for years to come. Suaimhneas síoraí, dear Eleanor.
To honour Eleanor’s wishes, a private interment, Memorial Mass and Celebration of Life will be held this spring.
