Eleanor Atkinson
novembre 14, 1931 — décembre 10, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, aunt, sister-in-law, cousin and friend.
Eleanor was born November 4, 1931 on the family farm near Aberdeen, Saskatchewan to Edward and Anna Zelmer. Eleanor and her siblings would travel by horse drawn sleigh or buggy to Strawberry Valley School, a one room school house. Before and after school there were chores to be done from working in the fields and stooking to caring for animals and housecleaning and preparing meals for thrashing crews. It is here that Eleanor’s strong sense of work ethics had first begun.
Occasionally a trip to Saskatoon occurred, one exciting trip was June 3, 1939, and the first ever visit to Canada by the reigning King George 6 and Queen Elizabeth. Later, when Eleanor came out of school and moved to Saskatoon she worked as a babysitter, making meals and housekeeping. Shortly after Eleanor met her soon to be husband, Thomas Atkinson and were married June 9, 1950. They soon had a family of three children, Shirley, Glen and Keith. «The Atkinson Kids» kept both Eleanor and Tommy hopping, with dance, sports teams, bike riding and swimming. Many a late night Mom spent sewing dance costumes and mending and altering sports uniforms. Mom enjoyed spending time in her garden; she loved her cherry tomatoes and greeting the birds each morning. Fall would be a busy time with canning the very best million dollar pickles and freezing vegetables. Sundays would be fun filled with a family Sunday drive, and an ice cream cone at the Diamond on 33rd Street. Eleanor also loved preparing delicious meals and desserts for her family. Sunday dinners were always extra special and people dropping by were always welcome to join. Eleanor enjoyed company of all ages, from her dear nieces and nephews popping in for Kool aid and cookies to family and friends spending an evening of playing cards, the coffee pot, lunch and tea were always on, and smiles and laughter filled the house along with Eleanor’s quick wit and sense of humor.
Eleanor was employed at University Hospital Dietary and at SIAST. As a mature student Eleanor also become a Nurses Aid and worked in Oliver Lodge and other Nursing homes. She was so caring and sweet and always took the very best care of residents.
Mom was very happy to have grandchildren, Kevin, Theresa, Tenille, Mlee and Blair were Eleanor and Tommy’s pride and joy! The grandkids loved going for sleepovers and spending time with their grandma and grandpa. When the great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren arrived she was ecstatic!
The last two years have been challenging for Mom, she was losing her hearing and her eye site was failing. Faith has always been important to her, with her daily scripture readings; we attended a recent Lutheran service, and no hymn book was needed, as she sang out all the hymns by memory. Mom had become so weary, tired and frail. But no matter how exhausted she was her face would light up with the biggest smile when you came to visit her and she would have the biggest hug when you were leaving.
Eleanor’s Love of Family was everything to her, and we her family are so blessed she passed that legacy down to us. Eleanor was predeceased by her parents, Edward & Anna Zelmer; her husband, Thomas Atkinson; son-in-law, Wayne Sick; and great-grandson Mason Girod. Eleanor was the last of her siblings. She was preceded by her cherished brother, Arnold Zelmer; and equally cherished siblings and their spouses, Rudolph & Cynthia Zelmer, Alma & William Halt, Clara & John Wiebe, and Lora & Robert Hardy.
Eleanor will be sadly missed and forever remembered by her daughter, Shirley Sick; grandson, Kevin Sick (Cindy); great-granddaughters, Brooklyn and Kadie; great-granddaughter, Tyra McAllister (Brandon); great-great-grandsons, Bo and Titan McAllister; son, Glen (Bev) Atkinson; granddaughter, Theresa Atkinson (Stewart Pearce); great-grandson, Rylan Pearce; granddaughter, Tenille Girod (Eric Girod); great-grandson, Jaxen Girod; son, Keith Atkinson (Terry Leech-Atkinson); granddaughter, Mlee Atkinson; great-granddaughter Aurora; grandson, Blair Atkinson; dear friend of family, Brenda Taylor; as well as dear sister-in-law, Lyla Zelmer; dear cousin, Mary Pocha; and many dear nieces and nephews.
The Funeral Service will be held at Saskatoon Funeral Home, 338 4th Avenue North, Saskatoon, SK. on Monday, December 23, 2024 at 1:30 p.m. (viewing prior to service).
Eleanor will be laid to rest at Hillcrest Cemetery in the Garden of the Last Supper beside her beloved husband, Thomas Atkinson (who passed July 6, 1990).
