Obituary
Eleanor Anne Riach
November 20, 1933 – January 6, 2023
Eleanor Anne Riach, nee Fritzler passed away on January 6, 2023 at age 89.
Surviving Eleanor are her sister-in-law Doreen Riach, numerous nieces and nephews, as well as great, and great-great nieces and nephews.
Eleanor was predeceased by her husband, Ian Riach in 2005, as well as by her parents, her sisters and brothers and their spouses: Susan Brooks (Gordon), Emily Dabrowski (Arthur), Edward Fritzler, Katie Fritzler, Freda Hendry (Malcom), Annie Dabrowski, Alex Fritzler (Doris), Godfrey Fritzler (Anne), nephews Duane Dabrowski and Dennis Hendry, in-laws Bill Dabrowski and Marion Dabrowski.
Eleanor’s life was centred by her love of her spouse, family and friends, her career in teaching, and volunteering.
The ninth and last child of Gottfried and Sussana Fritzler, Eleanor was born on November 20, 1933 at the farm south of Govan. Eleanor attended school at Cymric for five years until it closed, moving to Govan to live with her sisters and brothers to complete school in town. Her post secondary education was a Teaching Certificate accomplished at Moose Jaw Normal School, and at the University of Saskatchewan, Eleanor earned two Bachelors degrees, in Education and in Arts.
At age 18, Eleanor began her 37 year career in education. Beginning at Gibbs, she next taught in Nokomis. During her six years at the latter, she met and married Ian Riach in 1958. In 1960, the Riachs moved to Raymore, where Eleanor taught for the next 30 years. She taught primarily mathematics and sciences which were then unconventional subjects for women educators. Eleanor was a winning coach of sports and she organized many school events.
In honour of her work in public life, Eleanor was awarded the esteemed Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002. Eleanor was a champion for improvements to institutions that served people. Grounded by the values of connecting and serving, Eleanor took her role as a community member seriously. She engaged her skills with tenacity, humour, and compassion.
Her contributions are notable and highlights are merited: Eleanor served as board member on the Touchwood Qu’Appelle Health District. In the United Church, Eleanor served as board member and chair for both the local Raymore UC as well as the Crossroads Pastoral Charge. Both editions of the Raymore History Book were recipients of her work. While Ian was Mayor of Raymore, the Riachs twice traveled to celebrate milestone occasions of its twin city in Raymore, Missouri.
Eleanor counted her hobbies as curling, knitting, sewing and photography. She enjoyed her work on the farm, and she loved birthday party celebrations as well as her dogs.
Through her work and activities, promoting the success of others rang strongly. Eleanor was gifted in pragmatics, which enabled her to bring the light of learning to her students. While generations of students continue to sing praises of her teaching to this day, Eleanor never considered herself exceptional. As a wife and friend, she was interested, involved, steadfast, and gracious. Eleanor enjoyed coffee sessions to discuss current world events and the stories of local goings-on. She was a loved family member who both cared for, and took care of, her relatives. Eleanor had the uncommon ability to remember the past, live in the present and prepare for the future.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday, January 10, 2023 at 1:30 pm in the Raymore United Church, Raymore, SK. Following the service, interment will take place in the Raymore Protestant Cemetery, with a lunch to follow in the church basement.
Donations in memory of Eleanor can be made to the Raymore United Church and/or to the Regina Humane Society.
Arrangements entrusted to Conley Funeral Home, Raymore, SK. 1.306.746.1000
