Elaine was born on April 4, 1932, in Edberg, Alberta to William and Olava Schiele.
Elaine was raised in rural Alberta and met Arnold Reum after she graduated from Camrose Lutheran College where she studied business. They married Apr 17, 1954 and together they built a life filled with hard work, love, and community involvement. As both Elaine and Arnold grew up on farms, they tried the farming life at first, but it was not kind to them due to the harsh winters. During this time, they had two sons: Rodney Wayne (born Nov 7, 1955) and Gordon Neil (born Oct 4, 1956). Elaine’s aunt and uncle had moved to Naramata and Elaine’s parents were looking to retire in the Okanagan as well. So, Elaine and Arnold made the move with their two sons and arrived in Kaleden, BC in 1963. They purchased an apple orchard and moved a trailer onto the property to live in while they built their home. This was just to be a spec home as the original plan was to go back to Alberta. However, they ended up living in this home for 56 years as the Kaleden community was close knit and it quickly felt like home!
Elaine and Arnold transitioned into the construction business when Arnold founded Reum Contracting. Elaine played an active role as bookkeeper for their company. She also was active in the community, notably serving on the committee that raised funds to save the Kaleden Community Hall from demolition. Through their dedication and organizing fundraising dinners and variety shows, the hall was preserved for future generations, and it continues to serve the community today.
Elaine was a devoted member of Penticton Alliance Church, involved in various church activities for many years. Most notably were her contributions to the church choir, women’s ministries and youth group. Her faith and spirit of service were a guiding force in her life. Elaine and Arnold also owned a Christian bookstore in downtown Penticton for a time where Elaine ran the bookstore and loved meeting new people.
Elaine and Arnold loved travelling to various countries. For 22 years they escaped the winters and vacationed in their second home in Mesa, Arizona where they enjoyed golf and making many friendships that lasted for decades.
Elaine and Arnold lived in their original home in Kaleden until June 2019 when they moved into the Regency. Their kids and grandkids all live in the Okanagan and some still live on and enjoy the Kaleden homestead to this day.
Elaine is predeceased by her beloved husband, Arnold Reum (April 5, 2023), after nearly 69 years of marriage, and her daughter-in-law Elinor Reum (August 16, 2023). Elaine is survived by her sons, Rodney and Gordon (Nicole), along with five granddaughters (five ‘grandsons’) and nine great-grandchildren who lovingly called her Gigi. Her great grandchildren were the light of her life. She will be remembered by all for her kindness, generosity, love for God and her family and her commitment to her community.
