It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Elaine Marion (Carew) Matheson on June 3, 2023, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, with her family by her side.
Born in Sydney on January 30, 1950, she was a daughter of the late Alfred and Lena (Anderson) Carew.
Elaine grew up in Whitney Pier, graduating from Sydney Academy in 1968. She started working at Kmart, then moved on to Irving Oil and finished her career at Wal-Mart in Sydney River, where she worked for over 25 years. Upon her retirement, Elaine enjoyed her Friday lunch with the girls. Elaine would look forward to her visits from Rena and Mary and connecting with her close friend, Gloria DeMone. Elaine and Martin enjoyed spending their summers in Mira at their trailer with family. Over the years, Elaine was involved in various aspects of the Anglican Church, including the choir.
Elaine survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Martin; son, Daryl (Brandy); and granddaughter, Kate Lainey, all of Sydney; sister, Joanie (Steve) MacKenzie, Fredericton; brother, George, Sydney; sisters-in-law, Rena, Deborah and Donna; brothers-in-law, Gerald (Jane), Dan and Owen; and her nieces and nephews.
Elaine was predeceased by her sister, Shirley Brennan; brothers, Louie, Gerry, Kevin and Bernie; and sisters-in-law, Arlene and Judy Carew and Brenda Matheson.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. Visitation will take place Friday, June 9th from 4-7 pm at Sydney Memorial Chapel. A Celebration of life will be held Saturday, June 10th at 11 a.m. in the Church of Christ the King with Rev. Peter Rafuse officiating. Interment will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Renal Dialysis Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital or to the Church of Christ the King.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at the Renal Dialysis Unit at the CBRH for the care and support they provided to Elaine over the last number of years, along with the nursing staff of 4C at the CBRH for their compassion and support to our family during this difficult time.
