EILEEN SMITH
After a courageous battle with cancer, it is with great sadness that we announce the very peaceful passing of a truly remarkable woman, Eileen Thelma Vivian Smith (Karila), on Friday October 13, 2023, at St Joseph’s Hospice at the age of 83 with the love of her life Roy and family by her side.
Eileen was born July 5, 1940, and grew up in Suomi, Ontario. In 1956 she met her love; Roy, they were married just short of 66 years this November. Eileen worked many jobs before she found her passion in healthcare and returned to school to become a nurse’s aide and later a Registered Practical Nurse, working at Westmount Hogarth Riverview Manor until her retirement.
Over the years, Eileen enjoyed camping her favourite place being Arrow Lake Narrows, travelling with her sisters and daughters, BINGO and knitting. She’s known for the most delicious Christmas Cake, Butter Tarts and making of her rugs.
Eileen is survived by her husband Roy with whom she shared a true love story. Daughters; Kathy (Dave), Charlene (Rob), Angela (Bob) and son D’Arcy. Grandchildren Gary (Jen), Melanie (Emanuele), Lisa (Gary), RJ, Richard (Nicole), Neil, Tyler. Great Grandchildren; Chance, Abbigale & Ethan, Jacob, Justin, Savannah & Brianna Siblings; Marlene, Margaret, Donna (Steve), Karen (Richard), Clifford (Marlene), Lorna (Stan), Marie, Joanne (Brian).
Eileen is predeceased by Father & Mother Laurie & Impi Karila, sisters Shirley (Brother-in-law Sven; Nephew Steven) & Norma. Brother-in-law Brian, Elgin (Nephew; Brian) Granddaughter Samantha, Great Grandson Andrew.
Our family would like to express our gratitude to the TBRHSC Cancer care team, Dr. Bassuony and special nurses Nicole, Sandrine, Rinda and Kathryn (St Joes)
A celebration of Eileen’s life will be held at the South Neebing Community Center, 1841 Mountain Rd, Friday October 20, 2023 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm. Interment at a later date
Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 575 Central Avenue, Thunder Bay.
