Eileen Arbuckle (May 27, 1934 – February 12, 2024)
We are profoundly saddened with the death of our beloved Mom and
Nanny, Eileen Arbuckle on February 12th 2024 in Mahone Bay.
She leaves behind daughters Kathryn and Heather, son-in-law Jeff
Hopkins; grandchildren Alex Arbuckle (Hazen Frye), Stephen Arbuckle,
Kristen, Lauren and Ryan Hopkins; great-grand children Charlie and Ava
Frye.
She was predeceased by her husband Charlie, son Paul, parents Mary
Anne and Neil MacDonald and five siblings including her brother
Alexander who died in Italy during World War II when she was only 11
years old.
Mom didn’t always have an easy life but she made it beautiful by
always looking for the good in people, loving all living creatures,
having strong faith that things would turn out for the best, and
always keeping a sense of humour. Dad always described her as our
angel on earth and now our world will never be the same without
her.
Eileen was born and raised in Albert Bridge and was a proud Cape
Bretoner. She attended school there and helped teach the younger
grades in the one room school house. After her high school years she
applied for a job at the Royal Bank in Sydney where Charlie worked and
as the story goes he told his manager if he hired her, then Charlie
would marry her. They were married March 17th, 1955 and raised their
family in Truro, Corner Brook and Halifax. Mom made many dear friends
wherever she lived and her home was always open to those in need of a
good cup of tea and some biscuits, a home cooked meal with second
helpings and dessert, or a place to lay their head for however long
they needed it. For her children and grandchildren though, she did so
much more than that. She made “brown cakes”,
“Nanny’s cooking”, and the best muffins; she sang
lullabies and said prayers; she rocked our babies and fed our pets;
she laughed with us, hugged us when we needed it most; took care of
us, our triumphs and our troubles all our lives without question or
hesitation. She was amazing and we are so grateful to have had her as
our Mom and Nanny. We love you eternally.
The family sends a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Mahone Nursing
Home for their compassion and care.
There will be no visitation and internment will take place at a later
date.
