Edward W. Rubin
It is with profound sadness that we acknowledge the untimely passing in San Francisco of our great and beloved friend Edward W. Rubin on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, with his wife of over thirty years, Winnie Wong, a native of Hong Kong, holding his hand. Ed was born in Montreal, the son of the late Hyman Rubin and the late Tania Markoff, dear brother of the late Gerald Rubin.
Ed graduated from Outremont High School and received his Bachelor of Civil Law degree from the Université de Montréal. While at U of M law he became close with one of his professors, Pierre Elliot Trudeau. Upon graduation and, following Mr. Trudeau’s appointment as Canada’s Minister of Justice, Ed moved to Ottawa to serve as a close assistant to Mr. Trudeau. He stayed on in that role following Mr. Trudeau’s election as Canada’s Prime Minister.
Ed joined the prestigious Montreal law firm of Phillips and Vineberg where he became a partner and was assigned to manage the firm’s Paris office. Subsequently, in 1971 he established and managed their Hong Kong office where he was instrumental in enabling many world class entities to establish themselves in the historic newly opened Chinese marketplace.
In his early days in practice, Ed received various awards including from the Bar of Montreal for excellence in commercial law and from the Association of the Young Bar of Montreal for excellence in Civil Procedure.
Ed was very astute and knowledgeable in the world of politics and became influential and active in the Quebec Liberal Party’s D’Arcy McGee constituency. He was fluently bilingual and his outgoing, compassionate and friendly personality made him perfect for his various roles. Ed served on several international corporate Boards of Directors including Corton Hill Investments Limited and EWR Investments Limited of Hong Kong.
Ed will be sorely missed by all who were privileged to know him.
