Terrence Edward Gardiner
Edward Gardiner peacefully passed away on March 12, 2024 at Caressant Care Cobden – thus avoiding the terrible task of filing his 2023 Income Tax.
Born in Westmont, Quebec to Holmes and Theresa Gardiner, he plagued his younger sister Katheleen (Tom Vere) until they both achieved the rite of passage to independence and adulthood. He was a proper boy scout under the direction of his father and friends recall his wit and intellect. He also contributed to loss of hearing as he practiced playing his bagpipes in the house from the age of 12 onward. He belonged to a pipe band in Montreal and after moving to Ottawa he continued to pipe for family gatherings and the two-hour marathons on Sunday mornings (that began promptly at 10:00 am). He received his Bachelor’s of Commerce from McGill University and an MBA from Concordia University. Upon graduation from McGill he did the Grand European Tour which was considered the best way to complete a gentleman’s education.
He went to work for Bell Canada in Montreal but was transferred to Ottawa to work on Rates – if your phone bill went up from 1977-1981 please be assured he likely did the calculations.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Ida (nee Brown). They met at Bell and he caught her attention because he could quote The Cremation of Sam McGee by Robert Service. Both joined households and began a book-buying spree in 1987.
Shayna Anne (Dan DiMillo) was born in 1988 and Ed began referring to the family unit as the Gardiner Group. Basil (Nat) was born 3 years later and completed Ed’s dream of having a Boy And Girl. He did risk their livelihood by taking them on the Hollywood Tower of Terror at the ages of 6 and 9 and then again going up in a hot air balloon as soon as they each turned the minimum age of twelve.
He was retired out of Bell at the age of 50 and he began his writing career in which he contributed to Canadian History Magazine, The Highlander Magazine and The Investors Digest. He also assailed the Ottawa Citizen with multiple Letters to the Editor on various topics he felt needed his input. He self-published his book called: It Pays To Read The Boring Stuff. A guide to reading the fine print in Annual Financial Reports. Regretfully, it is out of stock on Amazon.
His Granddaughter Cordelia DiMillio brought him great joy with her toddler sense of wonder and growth.
His Step-Granddaughter, Shayla Marsden, who just also happens to be a care worker at Caressant Care, brought him many sugary treats and great comfort during his final journey.
The family would like to thank the other members of Staff at Caressant Care for their patience in running after Ed while he tried to escape for a walk. Their care for his end of life is greatly appreciated. We would also like to thank the Renfrew County Paramedics for their frequent attention to Ed and their wonderful care with a challenging patient. We also are grateful to the wonderful care of the Pembroke Regional Hospital staff – Especially Linda.
Friends are invited to share their memories of Ed with his family during visitation at the Murphy Funeral Home 296 Isabella Street, Pembroke on Friday March15th after 9:30 a.m. followed by a Celebration of Life in the chapel at 11:00 a.m. Spring Interment Lake Dore Point Church Cemetery. In memory of Ed donations to The Pembroke Regional Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.

My dear Ida;
Although very sad to hear of Ed’s passing, I can’t think of him without smiling.
His wry sense of humour always made me laugh. He taught me about fiddleheads – how to recognize them and pick them at the «cabin». Each spring since I look forward to fiddleheads! And his love of model trains. I vividly remember the set up in your basement in Sandy Hill in Ottawa.
I can see your hand in the writing of Ed’s wonderful tribute – written with humour (which I’m sure Ed would have loved). From the beginning, you and Ed had an undeniable spark which lit everyone around you..
Heart felt sympathy,
Colleen
