EDWARD SACKFIELD
April 26, 1927 – December 21, 2023
Passed away peacefully surrounded by family on December 21st at the age of 96. He can now join his wife Edie, who predeceased him. He is survived by his children Rob (Sue), Rick (Claire), Wendy (John), Beth (Peter), nine grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren (14th on the way), and Edith Gardner, a companion in his later years.
Ed was born and raised in Toronto, and moved to Richmond Hill in 1951 where he soon found himself immersed in sports and civic activities. He was a co-founder of the RH Curling Club, and participated in the founding of the Richmond Hill Arena Association, which he eventually headed (until his retirement in 1990) as Chief Administrator after leaving North End Cleaners, the business he shared with two of his brothers.
In the early 50’s he worked to ensure artificial ice was installed in the original RH Arena and the Curling Club. Between 1954 and 1990 he coached/managed at nearly every level within the Richmond Hill Minor Hockey Association, where he also spent time serving as a Director. He co-founded the RH House League Tournament, the RH Int’l Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament, and the RH Rams Jr. A Hockey Club. He served as Richmond Hill’s representative with the OMHA and was awarded in 1989 with the prestigious OMHA Honour Award. For more than a decade he served as the Ontario representative for the World renowned, Quebec International Pee-Wee Tournament, a tournament he was very fond of. As Administrator of the Arenas, he was instrumental in attracting new users of the facility and that included many Figure Skating schools, Men’s leagues, trade shows, etc. He was able to attract the Wayne Gretzky Coca-Cola Summer Hockey School for 2 years. He also signed the Ice Capades to utilize RH Arenas as their ‘Training Camp’ before they toured.
He worked tirelessly with various organizations to improve the image and lifestyle of Richmond Hill residents. He has received the Town’s Volunteer Award both individually and as part of group honorees. In 1991 he was honoured with the naming of the then new Ed Sackfield Arena. He is also an inductee of the Richmond Hill Sports Hall of Fame.
Ed will be missed by all that have known him. Past and present members of Town Council and staff, Arena Board Members and staff, RH Hockey Association, OMHA, RH Figure Skating groups, and friends and neighbours. But most of all he will be missed by those at his beloved cottage on Georgian Bay (Lafontaine Beach) where he has enjoyed summers since 1956. He loved the cottage and had many happy memories there, where he hosted golf tournaments for RH Town councillors and select staff, to barbeques for Seniors when he entered retirement living. The Beach will never be the same, but his annual contributions to that stretch of sand will be felt for many decades to come. Rest in Peace Dad, you are now pain free and reunited with Mom.
Visitation will be at the Marshall Funeral Home, 10366 Yonge Street, in Richmond Hill on January 4th from 2pm to 5pm and 7pm to 9pm. Funeral service will be held on January 5th at 11 am at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, 10030 Yonge Street, (corner Yonge St. and Major Mackenzie Drive).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation, or Hill House Hospice in Richmond Hill.
