Obituary of Edith Carmichael
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Edith Carmichael (nee Proudfoot) at Strathroy Middle General Hospital on Sunday, September 1st in her 80th year, surrounded by her children.
Edith was predeceased by Roy Carmichael (2020), her caring husband of 45 years, and her loving brother Bill Proudfoot (1989). Beloved sister of Jane Peter of Montrose, Scotland.
Dear mother of Erik (Lisa), Karen (Gerry), of Ontario and Gary (Angela) of Victoria BC. Loving Grandma and Granny of Andrew and Rachael Jensen, Tyler Schram, and Jack and Finn Carmichael. Loving aunt of Wilma (David) Gordon and family of Forfar, Scotland. She also has a large, wonderful extended family in Windsor, Ontario, through her marriage to Roy.
Edith was born on May 23, 1945 in Montrose, Scotland to Jane (nee Johnston) and William George Proudfoot. In 1960, she was the Rose Queen of Montrose. She met her first love, James Jensen as a teenager in Scotland and they were married in 1964 in Windsor, Ontario. Their children, Erik and Karen were born in the late ’60s.
She went on to marry Roy Carmichael and the family settled in London, Ontario in 1976. Gary came along a few years later. The family moved to Delaware, ON in 1988 and she and Roy moved to their last home in Mount Brydges, ON in 1999.
She loved having her family over and visiting relatives in Scotland when she could, taking care of the garden around the house and taking Jake to the dog park in Strathroy. She was fortunate to have been blessed with wonderful neighbours.
At Westmount Presbyterian Church in London, she was a longtime member and liked to sing in the choir and spoke highly of her minister Tim Raeburn-Gibson and his wife Kimberly. Edith said she felt like shouting from the rooftops to invite people to come and hear Tim preach, saying that people didn’t know what they were missing, and that they brought joy when they entered her life.
Edith was polite, considerate, and kind and will be remembered fondly by her children as a mother who always had time to listen, who had a great sense of humour, and who valued them as her greatest treasures. Her loss is immense, but her love did not die.
There will be a memorial service to celebrate Edith’s life at the Elliott-Madill Funeral home, Mount Brydges, Ontario on Thursday, September 5th with visitation at 11:00 am and service at 1:00 pm, with a light meal to follow.
Edith’s family would like to give their heartfelt thanks to the doctors, and to the kind nurses from One South at SMGH, who provided loving care to our beloved mum. We’d especially like to thank Michelle, Jen, and Sherry.
In lieu of flowers, in remembrance of Edith, donations can be made to Strathroy Middle Alliance Hospital Foundation.
