Also dearly loved by her many Canadian nieces/nephews and their families.
Edith was born April 8, 1927, in Hunwick, England. She grew up in Willington, Crook, County Durham, England where she enjoyed a wonderful childhood with her family and extended family. Mom spoke lovingly about her family and her many memories of group family excursions to the seashore in South Shields, NE England and frequents visits to local shop for newspaper wrapped fish and chips with scrapings.
Edith was the oldest living member of her English family.
After finishing school Edith worked in the payroll department at the Brancepeth Colliery (mining operation) Brancepeth, County Durham, England. It was at that time during World War II that Edith met her husband George who served in the Royal Canadian Army Service Core. They were married at 11:00 a.m. on October 18, 1945, in the St. Stevens Anglican Church in England. Edith’s brother was so excited after the marriage that he congratulated Edith by shaking her hand and kissing George.
George was shipped back to Canada in May of 1946 and Edith followed in August at the age of 19 along with many other war brides.
They purchased their house on Private Street West Gravenhurst in Sept 1946 where they made their home for their family. Edith stayed in their family home for 4 years after George passed in 2002. In 2006 Edith sold her home to her oldest grandson and moved in with her youngest daughter and it remained her home for over 17 years until her passing.
Edith had many talents and interests over the years. Edith took great pride in both her flower and vegetable gardens. She was a talented seamstress, embroiderer, and knitter. She loved to bake, cook and preserve. Throughout the years she enjoyed bowling, playing darts, snowmobiling, music, dancing, scenic autumn trips through Algonquin Park and her outings to the casino (enjoyed her last trip August 2023 with her daughters).
Edith developed many lasting friendships throughout her lifetime including within the West Gravenhurst Community family where she lived most of her life, during her time as lifetime member of Ladies Auxiliary – Gravenhurst Legion Branch 302 and as a lifetime member of the Silver Moon Rebekah Lodge #384.
Edith worked at a factory in Orillia, ON for a short period of time, did bookkeeping for George’s trucking business, and for many years worked at the Gravenhurst High School as the cafeteria manager where she once again developed many lasting friendships with her co-workers, school staff and students. The ladies of the cafeteria took pride in preparing all the food and desserts from scratch and were well known for the “famous butter tarts”. Once processed meals were introduced Edith opted to finish out her career as a custodian at Gravenhurst High School.
Dearest Mom, as you embark on your heavenly journey we know you are there watching over us always. We are so grateful to have had you in our lives. We miss you so and will love you forever. xoxoxo
A heartfelt thank you from our family to Dr. Kimberly Forester, Liz Hewitt, Patti Barnes and the nurses at Closing the Gap for their on-going care of our Mom; the paramedics that assisted our Mom on several occasions before going into hospital and Amanda; Dr. Adam MacLennan, the nurses, PSWs and all the staff at South Muskoka Memorial Hospital during her final days.
If desired donations to the Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Canada (Research), South Muskoka Memorial Hospital (MAHC) would be appreciated by the family, or a donation of your choice.
