June was born in Corning, SK. She was the oldest of seven children; a loving mother to Wendy Vogel (Lorne-deceased), George How, Gordon How (Shelley); a loving grandmother to, Andrea Vogel (Tyson Drabinasty), Tyson Vogel (Trisha Witt) and Kordel How; a loving great-grandmother to, Riley Pickett (Andrea), Brody and Nicholas Vogel (Tyson). June was predeceased by her parents, Robert and Grace Long (nee- Olmstead); son, Gordon How; and five of her younger siblings, George Long, Jim Long, Shirley Tuttosi, Donald Long and Lillian Karcha. She is survived by her sister, Laura Wiley.
Shortly after she was born, June’s family moved to a farm by Endeavour, SK where she completed her education and graduated from Grade 12 in Sturgis, SK. Shortly after graduation, June took a train to Montreal, QC, joined the Air Force and was stationed in Barrie, ON. While in Barrie, June met and married Ronald Norton in October 1954. Wendy was born on July 1, 1955, which ended June’s Air Force career (forced retirement) after which she was a full-time mother and home maker. The marriage dissolved and she and Wendy returned to Sturgis, SK, where June worked a variety of jobs. In 1964, June married David How and moved to a farm north of Pelly, SK. In 1970, the twins George and Gordon were adopted, and the family was complete. June then worked as a home maker, farm wife and assisted with their business, the Norquay Auction Mart. Eventually, the family moved to Norquay, SK. Following a divorce in 1981, June took a job as the school janitor and worked in that role until 1999. Following retirement from school, June decided to take a part- time job as a photographer and reporter with the local newspaper, the Norquay Star. She continued to work there until she was 80 years old and thoroughly enjoyed her ‘retirement’ job. Throughout her time in Norquay, June was a longstanding member of the Norquay Legion and the United Church.
June loved to garden and was known for her beautiful flowers, particularly her lilies. She also loved to travel and travelled throughout Canada, the United States, Germany, Italy, Mexico, and a Caribbean Cruise. She enjoyed most sports, was an avid curler, enjoyed dancing, playing cards and board games with friends and family. She loved to camp at nearby Crystal Lake, or just go for a swim on a hot day, particularly if the grandkids were visiting. Above everything else, family was the most important thing to June. It was especially important to her that all the family could be together during holidays, and to attend all the sporting events that she could. Her support was inspiring and appreciated by all family members.
A special thank- you to all the staff and physicians at the Saskatoon City Hospital (particularly Dr. Margaret Truchan) for the wonderful care during June’s hospital stay.
June is loved beyond measure and will be forever missed.
