Obituary
It is with great sadness the family of Edgar Coffey of New Bridge, St. Mary’s Bay, announce his passing, at age 86, at home surrounded by his family on March 27, 2023.
Predeceased by his parents Albert & Catherine Coffey, brothers Jim and Fred Coffey, parents-in-law Ethel & Peter Furey and brothers-in-law Frank and Bernard Furey.
Leaving to mourn with loving memories are his beloved wife of 59 years, Mildred «Millie» (nee Furey); his 3 children: Edgar «Junior» Coffey (Irene Doody) of St. John’s, Jackie (Brian) Morrissey of Little Harbour, Nova Scotia, and Cathy (Joe) Gaudon of Mt. Pearl; his loving grandchildren: Jordan & Christopher McDonald, Alex Gaudon, Benjamin & Abygail Morrissey and Brooke & Skye Coffey; his brothers & sisters and brothers-in-law & sisters-in-law and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Dad left home at the early age of 15 to work in Seven Islands and continued to follow where the work was – from Seven Islands to Wabush to Churchill Falls. When he moved to New Bridge in 1971 he worked with MacNamara Construction paving the Riverhead Road before opening his own full-service gas station and convenience store. He was a self-taught mechanic and both he and Mom worked that business until 2005. After that he still couldn’t sit still, taking a job at Bull Arm-Hibernia worksite where he retired at age 65.
He loved to hunt (shoot) turrs, a common Newfoundland birding sport. In his day he also enjoyed moose hunting. One could even argue that if he walked out the door and looked up the hill he had no trouble spotting a moose. We always had fresh fish and he enjoyed salting fish. He loved Mom’s cooking which he preferred over anyone else’s.
He never had the opportunity to try golf while growing up but we remember taking him to play a few times and he liked it and turned out to be a real «Natural». He enjoyed watching Wrestling on TV and even going to St. John’s to see the live matches. It was even funny to watch him as he watched it on TV, getting caught up in all the excitement and drama of the matches. He enjoyed a bottle of beer in his younger days, however his «poison of preference» was a glass of Lamb’s rum in a small glass with a little Pepsi, no ice. You could often find him in his younger years playing the Accordion (squeeze box) as we tapped along.
During his last few years while suffering from Dementia, he may have forgotten people he once knew, but he never forgot Mom. She will treasure that memory forever.
Our Dad was «One of a Kind» and «He was a Coffey», as what he was often referred to. He had a big heart and he would have no trouble telling you what he thought while in the same breath do anything for you – Dad you will be forever missed. xoxo
Cremation has taken place. A graveside service for family and friends will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers a donation in his memory may be made to a charity of choice.
