Ed McLean – Cobourg, ON
A limb has fallen from the family tree
That says grieve not for me
Remember the best times,
The laughter, the song
The good life I lived
While I was strong.
The young feller is gone. Ed was always young at heart.
Ed passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, September 17, 2023, with the love of his life, his wife Lynn, by his side. Born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Ed came to Toronto when he was 15 years old determined to succeed in life. He accomplished exactly that in so many ways.
The very definition of a self-made man, Ed worked hard each and every day from a very young age. A quick learner and natural entrepreneur, Ed started working on house chimneys in the city then moved up to industrial chimney work, leading crews as the foreman. Eventually, in 1984, he and Lynn started their own successful industrial chimney business, McLean Chimney Co. Ltd., which they ran together for nearly 30 years, earning the trust and business of customers all across Canada.
Ed held a lifelong passion for working with his hands, especially when it came to restoring and customizing classic cars and trucks. He was well known for his custom cars, especially his Mercs. He received many awards from famous builders, such as George Barris, Gene Winfield and many others. They all became friends over the years.
If he wasn’t at home, Ed could usually be found in his shop in Grafton where his friends would show up (you know who you are) to shoot the bull, tell a few lies and have a good laugh. These daily rituals and connections were things he really missed while he was ill.
Yet for all his accomplishments in business and the car world, Ed’s greatest success was his family. In 1966, from the moment he met Lynn in the bank where she worked, he knew she was the one for him. It was the start of a 57-year love story. He was a loving husband and very proud father of their two children, Nicole and Clint. In later years, he became the beloved Boppa of four beautiful grandchildren: Tyler and Amber Hurst, and Willa and Macaulay McLean. One of Ed’s greatest joys was bringing out his inner child, getting right down with the grandchildren at their level, and seeing what trouble they could get into together. Ed was also a loving and generous father-in-law to Nicole’s husband, Jim, and Clint’s wife, Missy, who loved him dearly.
Ed is deeply loved and remembered by his sister, MaryLou Byrne, and her husband, Danny. He was predeceased by his parents, Annie and Michael McLean, and five siblings, Margaret, Anna, Martha, Michael and Peter.
Lynn and family would like to thank Dr. Paul Caldwell for his many years of compassionate care of Ed, always listening and ensuring Ed received the best medical attention. Thank you also to Dr. Francesco Mulé with Northumberland Hills Hospital and Ed’s House Northumberland Hospice Care Centre. Lynn greatly appreciates the many months of guidance and support. Ed always looked forward to your visits and enjoyed your willingness to share a laugh (and have an apple) even on the hard days. Sincere thanks also goes to Ed’s nurse, Victoria, and PSW, Nicole, as well as his PSW, Kim. Each of these professionals treated Ed with incredible warmth, kindness and understanding, and had a significant impact on his quality of life. Much love and gratitude to Alicia from Lynn and the entire family for always being there when needed and keeping up with Ed’s sense of humour from day one.
Lynn wants everyone to know and remember that Ed was a man of his word and who always put everyone else ahead of himself. In his honour, please consider making a donation to Ed’s House Northumberland Hospice Care Centre or the Northumberland Humane Society. Or simply
help someone else out.
When I am gone, release me, let me go.
I have so many things to see and do.
You mustn’t tie yourself to me with too many tears,
But be thankful we had so many good years.
I gave you my love, and you can only guess
How much you’ve given me in happiness.
I thank you for the love that you have shown,
But now it is time I travelled on alone.
So grieve for me a while, if grieve you must,
Then let your grief be comforted by trust.
It is only for a while that we must part,
So treasure the memories within your heart.
I won’t be far away for life goes on.
And if you need me, call and I will come.
Though you can’t see or touch me, I will be near.
And if you listen with your heart, you’ll hear,
All my love around you soft and clear.
And then, when you come this way alone,
I’ll greet you with a smile and a «Welcome Home.»
