It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Earlbert W. Spence who entered into rest at home in Cambray on Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2023 in his 94th year after a life well-lived.
Born in Lindsay to Robert and Gertrude Spence and younger brother to Murray. He enjoyed his childhood in the village of Cambray with his parents as proprietors of the Cambray General Store, the hub of the community. What better place than ‘the store’ to meet and greet villagers and farm families from all over the area as they came in to pick up their mail, groceries, hardware and dry goods. The wood stove in the middle of the store was a great place to hear all the news and stories of the day as people sat to visit and warm-up before heading home.
Cambray was a thriving village back then and the United Church brought area youth together to socialize. Meeting the love of his life from nearby Eden, he became the beloved husband of Edna Lee for 71 years.
As young adults he and his brother Murray established Spence Brothers Fur Farm in Cambray which thrived for several decades. While working 7 days a week he still found the energy to play on the Cambray Cardinals baseball and hockey teams and was a member of the Lindsay Horsemen’s Association. In later years he was recognized as the oldest member of theRetreads Motorcycle Club, riding into his 80’s after having travelled around North America on a number of adventures.
Throughout his life he enjoyed building and carpentry leaving behind a well-crafted barn, sheds, a log cabin and a beautiful family cottage, not to mention the many reno jobs he did for countless others. He honed his furniture making skills and has left his family with a number of beautiful pieces to continue his legacy of being helpful and supportive in so many practical ways.
Earl was the loving father of Deborah (Dan), Arlene ( Stephen, deceased), Donald (Ravi), Lorraine (Rick) and Deanna (David). He is the cherished Grandpa of Adriana (Rick), Erin, Spencer (Samantha), Dane (Marie), Marina, Hannah and great-grand children Adaline, Zade and Madison, all of whom have been blessed by his gentle kindness and good humour.
As the oldest surviving member of the historical Cambray community, he was fondly referred to and will be remembered as the “Earl of Cambray”.
Visitation will be held at Cambray United Church, 444 Cambray Road, Cambray, on Sunday December 3rd from 1:00 to 2:00 pm. A Celebration of Life to follow at 2:00 p.m.
