Earl G. Young
1927-2024
It is with
heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Earl G. Young of Grand
Pre, NS.
Earl was born
on March 10, 1927 and raised in Halifax, NS by his parents George S.
Young of Petpeswick and Winnifred M. Young (Cross) of Tancook
Island.
In Earl’s 97
years he saw and experienced many things and was connected to many
historic events. At the age of 9, Earl remembered seeing the
Hindenburg fly over Halifax. As a teenager during WWII, Earl
was employed by Clark-Rus Aircraft in Eastern Passage, NS repairing
damaged airplanes. Although before he was born, Earl’s parents and
older siblings lived above the store they owned in North End Halifax,
all surviving the Halifax Explosion.
Earl also saw great sadness in his life with the
death of his two loving sons, Brian and Wayne, yet somehow was able to
continue to live his life with a gentle and full heart and always with
his unique sense of humor.
Earl’s career path saw him working as a mechanic in
the city but he spoke mostly of the 20 years he worked with his
brother, Harris, at H. E. Young Service Station. He was later an
inspector with the Registry of Motor Vehicles for a number of years,
retiring in 1988.
After retirement, Earl and his wife, Sheila, started
their «hobby» of wood carving which lead to many years of
competing, winning many first place awards and eventually judging at
the World Carving Competition. Earl was a former Director and Honorary
member of the Nova Scotia Wildlife Carver’s Association and was also
an Honorary member of the PEI Woodcarver’s Association. The world of
carving fostered many wonderful friendships over the years which Earl
and Sheila cherished.
Earl loved Cape Breton fiddle music and played the
fiddle himself. His hunting trips to Cape Breton with his brother, and
later his nephew, Joe and great nephew, Allan, were highlights of
Earl’s life and he would take that fiddle with him on occasion, once
ending up playing alongside renowned musician, John Allen Cameron. In
Earl’s words «He played better than me!»
Earl’s longevity can be linked directly
to his strict diet of bacon, deep fried foods and chocolate covered
nuts. Apologies to all dietitians trying to make us eat
healthier.
Earl is
survived by his wife and best friend of 36 years, Sheila;
step-daughters Wanda Pulsifer (Amherst) and Amy Pulsifer (Halifax);
daughter-in-law, Mary Ann (Bridgewater); granddaughters Sarah (Allen),
Jennifer (Matt), Lindsay (Cole), Morgan (Niklas), Olivia; great
grandchildren Bowen, Levi and Ellie. Earl is also survived by many
loving nieces and nephews along with their children and grandchildren
who all brought so much love and joy to Earl with their frequent
visits.
Besides his
parents, Earl was predeceased by his first wife, Jean; sons, Brian and
Wayne; brothers, Harris and Walter and his sister, Viola
Dauphinee.
Cremation
has taken place and a funeral service is planned for Saturday, August
10th at 11:00 a.m. at White Family Funeral Home in
Kentville.
