Duncan Brian MacIntyre
1948-2024
Duncan MacIntyre, 76,
of Greenfield, loving husband and father of five, passed away
peacefully on the afternoon of Saturday, December 14, 2024, due to
heart-related complications.
Duncan was born and
raised on Cape Breton Island and moved to Halifax as an adult. He
worked various jobs that brought him throughout the US and western
Canada before returning to Nova Scotia and earning a Bachelor of
Education degree from Mount Saint Vincent University. While working
briefly as a substitute teacher in Halifax, he met Noel Lewis at his
sister Rachel’s wedding. In 1978 Noel and Duncan were
married. Not long after starting a career with Canada Post, Duncan
accepted a transfer to the Annapolis Valley where he and Noel raised
their family.
A devoted husband and
father, he immersed himself with great love in family life, enjoying
time with his wife and five children, and eventually his nine
grandchildren. He had a great passion for the outdoors and much of the
family time was spent hiking local trails where Duncan
enthusiastically shared his knowledge of plant and animal life with
his children. Being very fond of swimming as early and as late in the
year as he could, the family regularly frequented Nova
Scotia’s many beaches. Throughout his life he took up a wide
range of interests and hobbies. He wrote his own science fiction
stories. He enjoyed the art of painting, both actively and passively,
being particularly fond of the works of Dali and Monet. He enjoyed
music and played the guitar and fiddle. He loved to go on early
morning fishing trips and late evening stargazing excursions. In the
latter part of his life, he took a strong interest in photography and
bird watching. The day before his death he sat at the window helping
two of his younger grandchildren identify some of the many well-fed
birds.
First and foremost,
Duncan was a man of faith. With great zeal, he studied and defended
the Catholic faith over the course of his life and was actively
involved in the Church for many years. He had a strong devotion to the
Blessed Mother and always emphasized a family life centered on Christ.
Becoming more interior as he reached old age, he committed a great
deal of his time to Our Lord in prayer.
Duncan is survived by
his loving wife, Noel; sons, Rory (Emma) and Lauchlan (Anne);
daughters, Heather (Stephen) Stoppa, Karen (Stephen) Warnshuis and
Alice MacIntyre; grandchildren, Mikaela, Joseph, Walter, Ambrose,
Natalia, Lincoln, Peter, Billy and Beatrix; brothers, William
«Bill» (Andrea) and Roy; sisters, Ave (Peter) Hoeper,
Mary-Lou (Roger) Johnson, Margaret (John) Theakston and Rachel (Ron)
Houlihan; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Duncan was preceded in
death by his parents, William «Ignatius» and Margaret
(Keylor) MacIntyre; brother, Joey; and sisters, Catherine (Waldo)
Smith and Anne Sharon King.
A funeral service for
Duncan will be held in the St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic
Church, Kentville, at 11:00 am Saturday, December 21, 2024, with
Father John MacPherson to officiate. A time for fellowship and
refreshment will follow the service in the church hall, interment to
take place in Holy Cross Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements
have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation
Services, Kentville. Online condolences and inquiries may be directed
to www.whitefamilyfuneralhome.com.
