Dulcie Feltham (nee Starkes) November 16, 1938 – December 27, 2023
The life you lead, is the lesson you teach.
Dulcie was born at home in Valleyfield to parents Sam and Janet Starkes. She joined her five older
sisters, Effie (Dafoe), Phyllis (Philpott), Lizzie, Betty (Wiseman), and Annie (Hancock). Then the
family grew to include younger sister Kathy (Geoff Muggridge) and finally two brothers Wayne
(Rosalynn) and Sterling (Sharon). In 1943 her family moved to Musgravetown, where she will be laid
to rest. As a child, Dulcie was described as a “little devil”, and as a teenager, she was very popular
and full of fun. Dulcie had a very happy childhood and remained close to her siblings and their
spouses for all of their lives, and she treasured being Aunt Dee to her many nieces and nephews
and their families.
She moved to St. John’s to study nursing at the General Hospital and graduated as a Registered
Nurse in 1960. She worked as a nurse in St. John’s until 1964 when she moved to Gander and
started working at James Paton Memorial Hospital, and late in her career at Lakeside Homes,
retiring in 2000. She also nursed many unofficially through the years – whoever needed her help.
Dulcie met the love of her life, Merle when she was 18 years old, and they have been married since
September 22, 1962. They moved into their home on Hawker Crescent in 1964, and Dulcie made
that house a loving and welcoming home for many friends and family over the years. Their home on
Hawker Crescent continues to be a gathering place for her family and friends.
Dulcie was the best mother in the world to Val (Clayton), Pam (Mike) and Roma (Steve), and she
gave them the best childhood anyone could imagine. She guided and helped her daughters
become moms themselves, and Dulcie became Nan to Sara (Brad), Julia, Sam, Jacob, Jemma and
Leah. Dulcie was blessed enough see her grand-daughter Sara become a mom and she then
became Nanny to Zoe, Lila, Alice and William. She also loved many pets throughout her life
including her extra special companion Mila. When asked who she loved the most, she replied “That
depends on who needs my love the most at that moment”. She thought that her kids and grandkids
were the smartest, best-looking and most talented and she was proud of every one of them. Her
life revolved around her family, and she spent every possible moment taking care of them and
making things special in a way that only she could.
Dulcie was a great story-teller and was known for her sense of humour. She showed love
generously with her famous food and with beautiful and treasured homemade gifts that she made
in ceramics, sewed, crocheted, knitted, cross-stitched, or quilted. She was compassionate and
generous. She was one of a kind and will be missed immensely.
She passed away surrounded by family, with Merle by her side. Concerned about others until the
very end, she wanted us to know that she’ll be alright and that she knew she was loved every
moment of her life. She went to heaven knowing that there was not one thing that she could have
done better during her time on earth and that she gave every ounce of love that she had to give.
Family will be receiving friends at Stacey’s Funeral Home , Gander Wednesday January 3rd 2-4 pm & 7-9 pm . A private family service will take place at Stacey’s Funeral Home January 4th 2024.
