Obituary of Dr. Vinod Kumar Mathur
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dr. Vinod Mathur at the Sault Area Hospital on Sunday, November 3, 2024 following a brave battle with a progressive lung condition. Beloved husband and best friend of Ghislaine for over 50 years. Vin was a wise and cherished father to Amanda (Chris Myers) and April Ludgate (MacKenzie). He was the proud Nanaji to Ethan, Carter, Robbie, Hudson, Rosalyn and Claire. Most loving big brother to Arun (Deepa), Yash (Sunita), Shashi (late Jagdish) and Anuradha (Promod). Predeceased by his parents Prakash and Padma Mathur. Son-in-law of Thérèse Girard (late Donat). He will be fondly remembered by his brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, friends and his urology work family.
Born and raised in New Delhi, India, Dr. Mathur’s journey was marked by dedication, compassion, and a profound commitment to medicine. At 16, Vinod moved to England with his family, as his father took up a diplomatic post in London for the Indian government. His academic brilliance shone through at the Medical College of St. Bartholomew’s, where he studied from 1962 to 1967. Graduating at the top of his class, he was awarded the prestigious Treasurer’s Prize along with the Junior and Senior Scholarships.
After completing his medical degree, Dr. Mathur served as a house physician and surgeon in London from 1967 to 1973. Seeking new opportunities and a fresh perspective, he immigrated to Canada, settling first in the charming town of Cochrane, Ontario. It was there that he met Ghislaine, his lifelong partner. His passion for medicine led him to specialise in Urology, completing his training at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. He relocated to Sault Ste Marie in 1982, where he dedicated the remainder of his career to providing exceptional care to his community.
Dr. Mathur worked as a urologist in Sault Ste. Marie from 1982 to 2020. During this time, he spearheaded numerous initiatives to improve urological care in the region. He was instrumental in establishing the urology clinic and introducing advanced procedures such as lithotripsy and ureteroscopy. He also pioneered new approaches to surgical techniques and introduced prosthetic devices which significantly enhanced the quality of care available to patients in Sault Ste. Marie and the surrounding area.
Outside of his professional life, Dr. Mathur had a rich and fulfilling personal life. He enjoyed trips to camp, Friday afternoon golf games with his friends at the Country Club, as well as playing bridge, badminton and tennis. Known for his brilliant mind he also had a charmingly forgetful side and he often misplaced his hats, keys and credit cards all around the city. Despite this, he was admired for his generosity, sage advice, and impeccable sense of style, always wearing suits – even on the hottest days.
Vin was deeply respected in his medical career, embodying the values of compassion and care throughout his career. Yet, his greatest pride and joy was his family. He was a devoted husband to Ghislaine, a loving father to Amanda and April, and the biggest supporter of his grandchildren. Whether it was hockey games/practices, dance recitals, baseball, soccer, or music concerts, Vin never missed an opportunity to be there for his family, always putting them first. His unwavering family devotion will forever be remembered.
Vin leaves behind a legacy of kindness, medical excellence, and profound family devotion. His cherished wife Ghislaine, his daughters Amanda and April, and his adoring grandchildren will forever hold his memory close to their heart.
We extend our deepest gratitude to the exceptional staff and physicians at the Sault Area Hospital. A special thank you to the entire ICU team, whose compassionate care granted us precious moments to cherish his radiant smile, infectious laughter, warm embraces, and unwavering zest for life. In his spirit, we will strive to heed his wise counsel: to let go of life’s trivial worries and embrace each day with gratitude.
Friends and family are invited to attend a Come & Go Celebration of Vinod’s life at Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Rd, 705-945-7758) on Friday, November 8, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Memorial donations to the Sault Area Hospital Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
