Dr. Joyce L. Beare-Rogers, CM, Ph.D., FRSC
In her 96th year, after a long and remarkable life, Joyce Beare-Rogers passed away at the Queensway Carleton Hospital in Ottawa, Ontario. She is survived by her sister Marian Grove (late Murray Grove), her daughter Anne (Peter Magee), and grandchildren Amy Fraser and William Fraser. She is predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Dr. Charles Graham Rogers and brothers Garnet Beare (Shirley) and Ivan Beare (Ann).
Joyce was born in Pickering Township, Ontario to Fred and May Beare, the eldest of four children. She was driven from an early age by intellectual curiosity and a love of learning. Joyce attended the University of Toronto where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Honour Science and a Masters degree in Public Health Nutrition. She taught physiology at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY before returning to Canada to begin research in lipids. While working in the Food and Drug Directorate in Ottawa, she pursued her doctorate in lipid biochemistry at Carleton University.
During her years of research in Ottawa, she served as an adjunct professor at the University of Ottawa and was involved in many international professional associations. Joyce was the first woman and first Canadian to be president of the American Oil Chemists Society. Her contributions were recognized by awards from the German Society for Fat Research (the Norman Medal) and the French Society for the Study of Lipids (Médaille Chevreul). She received the Borden Award from the Canadian Nutrition Society, the Compton Award from McGill University as well as Honorary Doctorates from the University of Manitoba and Guelph University. In 1992, she received the Order of Canada.
Joyce was a wonderful cook and loved entertaining friends and family. In her retirement, she enjoyed bridge, reading widely, and traveling with her husband. Heartfelt thanks to the Queensway Carleton Hospital for the wonderful care they provided. A celebration of life will take place on Saturday, May 11, 2024 at the First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Nature Conservancy of Canada .
