It is with great sadness that the family of J. Bruce Falls announce his passing on April 27, 2024. Bruce passed peacefully at home at age 100. He will be lovingly and forever remembered by his family and many friends. Beloved husband of 69 years of the late Ann Falls; father of Kathryn Falls (Roy Colalillo), Robert and Stephen (Jill Unhola). Grandfather of Alison and James Colalillo; brother of the late Barbara Graham. He instilled us all with a love of the natural world.
Bruce began a bachelor’s degree at the University of Toronto, but his studies were interrupted by WW2. He joined the air force and served until the end of the war as a radio technician. He then resumed his studies and went on to earn a PhD from U of T in Zoology. During his student days, he was one of the first park naturalists in Ontario working in Algonquin Park. In December of 1952 he married Ann and took his new bride to the park for a winter honeymoon and to monitor mouse studies. Those studies went on for decades and together Bruce and Ann continued publishing papers about mouse populations into their 80s.
After completing his PhD, he did a post doctoral fellowship at Oxford. From there he travelled throughout Europe learning about nature conservation practices. He also realized at Oxford that studying bird behaviour was easier than studying mice as you could see and hear what the birds were doing. Returning to take a faculty position at U of T, he went on to pioneer playback techniques to study bird behaviour. As he started his young family, he became president of the FON, now Ontario Nature. At the same time, he joined with some likeminded individuals to create the Nature Conservancy of Canada, which now protects over a million hectares of wilderness. During his tenure as president of the FON, he supported efforts toward the founding of the Bruce Trail Association. He would later be awarded the Order of Canada for his ground-breaking research and his lifelong efforts toward nature conservation.
A man of many talents, he authored many scientific papers and book chapters, taught thousands of undergraduates, and mentored dozens of grad students, he edited the first Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas, he architected and built two family cottages, made furniture, was an artist, a photographer, a world traveller, an avid fisherman and bird watcher. With the help of friends his birdathons raised over $100,000 for Birds Canada (another organization of which he was a founder). He was a philanthropist, giving thousands each year to dozens of charities of all descriptions. He has been honoured by many organizations including lifetime achievement awards from Friends of Algonquin Park and the Ontario Federation of Ornithologists, he was written up as a “Eco-hero” and “Trailblazer” by Ontario Nature and awarded an honorary Doctor of Science from Trent University. His legacy will live on.
A celebration of life will be held at the family home on Sunday May 26th at 2pm. Donations to the Nature Conservancy of Canada or Birds Canada would be appreciated.
