Dr. Harvey Lawrence Levitt
It is with profound sadness that the family of Harvey Levitt announces his passing on Wednesday, July 5, 2023, after a lengthy illness. A gentle, caring and highly principled person, he was loved and respected by his family, colleagues and all who knew him. Beloved son of the late Maxwell and the late Josephine Levitt. Adored husband of Margaret (Felberg). Cherished father and father-in-law of Jodie (Dez Keene), Sloane (Andrea Pasoff), Roanne (Louise Dodier), Wally (Beth Gamulka), and Lorne (Lisa Silverman). Proud grandfather of Adam, Melanie, and Arielle; Jonah, Ben, and Talia; and Sydney and Cameron. Treasured brother and brother-in-law of Thelma (Timmy) and the late Lawrence Cohen.
A practising orthodontist for over 60 years, Harvey was an Associate Professor of Dentistry at McGill University and an Associate Dental Surgeon at the Jewish General Hospital. He was also an Assistant Professor of Orthodontics and Periodontics in the School of Dental Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania, and he was the recipient of the Brainerd F. Swain Award as the outstanding teacher in the Department of Orthodontics in the late 1980s.
Harvey was well known in orthodontic circles and is considered to be one of the “fathers” of adult orthodontics. He lectured and gave courses around the world and was a major contributor to the Atlas of Adult Orthodontics. He served as President of the Mount Royal Dental Society, President of the Quebec Association of Orthodontists, and International Regent of Alpha Omega. At the 50th anniversary meeting of the Canadian Association of Orthodontists, Harvey was named “A Legend of Canadian Orthodontics.”
Coupled with his love for orthodontics was Harvey’s passion for chamber music. He started to play the violin at seven years of age and continued playing in orchestras and varied chamber groups, including an ongoing string quartet with his wife. During the summers, he was often a participant in chamber music groups in Canada and in Europe.
Harvey will be remembered for his puns and quirky sense of humour, for his violin playing, for making beautiful stained-glass artwork, for his absolute commitment to excellence and the profession of orthodontics, and for his fierce devotion to his family. His passing leaves a huge void in our hearts.
The family wishes to express its gratitude to Dr. Earl Edelstein and the staff at Jewish Eldercare Centre, including a special thank you to Orlando and Karen for their professionalism and empathy. The family is also deeply appreciative of Harvey’s caregivers, Linette and Giselle, for their patience and compassion. Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. W., on Sunday, July 9 at at 11:00 a.m. Burial at the Dorshei Emet Reconstructionist Congregation Section, Eternal Gardens Cemetery, Beaconsfield. Shiva at 4430 Sainte-Catherine St. W., Westmount, Sunday through Thursday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. daily. Donations in Harvey’s memory may be made to the charity of your choice.
