A life well lived: Jerry’s family celebrate the life of our husband, brother, brother-in-law, father, uncle and grandfather.
Born and raised on a dairy farm in Muskoka, Jerry was the third child of Cyril and Monica Gill and grew up surrounded by four brothers, a sister, cousins and extended family. At the age of 18, he met the love of his life, Anne, at the Delmonte-in-the-Pines Resort, around the corner from the family farm and 200 km from where Anne grew up, where they were both working as summer staff. After graduating from Gravenhurst High School, Jerry moved to Dundas and boarded with his future in-laws, Harry and Flo, while attending McMaster University, and graduated with a BA in 1964. Anne’s family gained an extra son and older brother, someone to eat the leftovers and assist with math and science homework. Jerry and Anne married in August 1964 and moved to Ottawa, as Jerry earned his MD and Anne supported the couple in her nursing career. During this time, Catherine arrived, and their little family moved to Hamilton for Jerry’s residency. Michael’s birth completed the family a few years later.
Jerry and Anne eventually moved out of town and into the country, where they enjoyed the flora, fauna and particularly the birds of the area. Jerry’s hobbies of photography and woodworking provided many of us with both art and useful objects and “Dad, could you make me…..” became a common phrase. One of his single spindle tables was taken to England in pieces in a suitcase, assembled on location and presented to the cousins we were staying with, who still treasure it. Jerry and Anne enjoyed many holidays in Canada and the US in search of art and birds. They were volunteer drivers for The Owl Foundation for years, bringing injured owls to the Foundation for treatment and returning them to their homes after rehabilitation. Jerry genuinely liked people and enjoyed choir singing – both at St. Ann’s Ancaster, and performing in the Lynden Spring Revue – as well as walking and cycling with a close group of friends.
Jerry’s career as an interventional radiologist provided him with great personal fulfilment, as he once told his daughter that he enjoyed “solving the puzzle” of what was going on inside his patients. He enjoyed working with trainees and groups were often invited out to the house for dinner, with a dish the family dubbed “Medical Student Chicken” usually on the menu. He completed his entire career at McMaster University / Hamilton Health Sciences, was the Chair of the Department of Radiology for a term and continued into retirement by taking locums at hospitals in Dunnville, West Haldimand and Sioux Lookout – where he was presented with the most beautiful and treasured custom-made and beaded moccasins by the Radiology staff in appreciation of his service.
Jerry took great delight in his grandchildren Peter, Erin, Erica, and Rory, and was so proud of them. He was a loyal brother, cousin, brother-in-law, uncle and father-in-law, and was the best Dad to Catherine and Michael. Most importantly, he was a loving and supportive husband to Anne. We will miss him and love him always.
Jerry’s family would like to thank Dr. Brandon Meyers and his team – your skills and support gave us time together for day trips, celebrations and memories. To the Chemo/Radiation Therapy staff at Juravinski Cancer Centre, the PSWs, Home Care Nurses and Occupational Therapists – you all helped Jerry stay at home as long as possible. To the staff of Margaret’s Place and Circle of Life – you helped Jerry and us at the end, more than we can ever tell you – thank you. We would also like to thank Kerry and Shae of Kerry’s St. James St Eatery in Waterford for years of friendship, food and laughter.
In honour of Jerry, donations may be made to The Owl Foundation www.theowlfoundation.ca or Chalice www.chalice.ca.
A Celebration of Life is to follow at a future date.
