After a long and fulfilling life, Adrian passed away peacefully on September 18, 2024, at St. Joseph’s Villa in his 85th year. Adrian is survived by his wife Trudie, his daughter Dr. Amanda Adams (John), and his grandchildren Ashley Tumber (Brandon), Emily Adams (Joseph), and Andrew Adams. He is also survived by his brother Nick Tumber in England, his sister Veronica in Australia and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his only son Jeremy and sister Valerie.
Trudie and Adrian left their native England and came to Hamilton in 1966. The plan was to stay just one year while Adrian completed a master’s degree at McMaster University. This changed when Adrian was offered a teaching position at Mohawk College, the beginning of a long, extensive and varied career as an educator. He taught at various institutions including McMaster University, the University of Toronto and was a consultant to the Ministry of Colleges and Universities. Adrian was a life-long learner, starting his studies in science and engineering, continuing with master’s degrees in physics and business and finally a PhD in Information Systems from the University of Toronto. Adrian consulted in energy management and environmental issues.
Adrian had a keen sense of humor and many interests. He was an enthusiastic cyclist and campanologist, riding and ringing church bells throughout southern England. He loved photography, travelling, boating and writing. In 2012, he authored a book: “Muskoka – A Novel” for his business students. He could problem solve anything, always happy to help a friend in need.
After retirement, Trudie and Adrian travelled throughout the US in their motorhome, spending many winters in Florida and summers at Three Mile Lake in his beloved Muskoka.
For the last years of his life, Adrian has lived at St. Joseph’s Villa, affectionately known by the staff as “Professor” where he was cared for with the utmost compassion and dignity. Special thanks to the wonderful staff on Birch Trail and Orchid Garden who made his final years comfortable.
Trudie is grateful for the love and support she has received from her family, her large circle of friends and her fellow parishioners at St. John’s Anglican Church in Ancaster. Funeral details will be confirmed by the family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Adrian’s memory to St. Joseph’s Villa (Dundas) or a charity of your choice.
