Obituary of Doug Loughery
There comes a time when the spirit calls us home. With a long full life of love from five children and a very special woman; it was March 10th that Douglas Loughery was called to move into a world full of unconditional love. He was blessed to have passed peacefully surrounded by his family.
Born on May 5, 1929, in Milford, Massachusetts and raised in Saint Martins, N.B. Doug was the son of the late Lloyd and Ida Catherine (Burchill) Loughery.
As a boy Doug worked on the family farm. Learning to drive at 10 was an easy task. That progressed to the delivery truck supplying milk and eggs with his father to the village of St. Martins. Driving became a passion and his love of owning and trading in excess of 45 cars from his 39 Chevy Coupe; 47 Studebaker to his 2015 Lincoln Hybrid.
He started his adult working life as a long-haul trucker travelling across North America. Doug returned to Saint John as a longshoreman on the docks, made castings at McAvity’s, then with a number of journeyman tickets including pipefitting, millwright and high-pressure steam qualifications saw out a successful 31 year career working in the maintenance department and balancing rolls in what is now known as Irving Paper, retiring in 1990.
In retirement Doug and his wife Joyce were active through the United Church in supporting the Saint John Clothing Depot and he sat on the Board of the Mission Council.
He took great pride in raising his family and spending time with his grandchildren. They were active campers spending many fun filled years at Sunrise Shores in Perry, Maine. Doug will be remembered for his sense of humour, even during difficult times in his life, he could always make someone smile with a quick quip or joke. He truly was a character who had a saying for anything life threw at him. Doug and his beloved wife Joyce, who he called “his girl”, celebrated 69 years of marriage on Jan 30th this year. Doug and Joyce were long time residents of St. Martin’s, and a piece of the village will always remain in their hearts.
Doug’s family woud like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to the staff and volunteers of Ridgewood and Kings Way Care Centre, for your kindness, compassion and friendship shown to Doug. Your kindness will never be forgetton.
Doug is survived by his wife, Joyce; sons, Bruce (Marsha) and Richard (Catherine) Loughery; daughters Cathy (Wayne) Love and Brenda Loughery; grandchildren: Michael (Alix) Loughery, Kristen Loughery, Erin (Evan) Loughery, Katie (Evan) Loughery, Jennie Loughery, Charlotte Loughery, Simon Loughery, Adam (Kaysie) Bouchard, Robbie Loughery and Rachel Loughery; great-grandchildren: Nathan Morrell, Makayla Morrell, Lexi Loughery, Liam Loughery and Lincoln Loughery; Ella and Madilyn Arsenault, Shayne and Gage Bouchard as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Doug was predeceased by his son Wendell Loughery; brothers: Arthur and Bill Loughery; and his sisters: Dorothy Vaughan and Carol Lalonde.
Arrangements are under the care of Kennebecasis Funeral Home, 152 Pettingill Rd. Quispamsis (506-849-2119). With visitation from 2:00 – 4:00 PM and 6:00 – 8:00 PM on Monday, March 13, 2023.
