Obituary
Peacefully, with family by his side, Douglas Dawson, aged 90, passed away on August 4, 2023.
Douglas was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and recent great-grandfather. He had a goal of reaching the age of 90, and in November 2022, he celebrated that milestone with a party filled with family and love.
Douglas was born in Portage la Prairie on November 24th, 1932, to Henry and Elsie. His character was built on the land of the family farm. He attended a one room schoolhouse with his younger brother, Barry. He then went on to attend the University of Manitoba and attained his Civil Engineering Degree in 1954. Doug told his family that first year university cost $200.00, which included room and board! While at university, he worked several labor-intensive summer jobs, including time in northern Manitoba installing runways, and surveying the land. The black fly bites cemented his determination to continue with his studies!
After graduating, Douglas started working with a couple of small engineering firms, and ultimately the majority of his career was spent with Manitoba Hydro.
It was in 1956, when he met “the most beautiful woman he had ever seen, and never had eyes for another”. Douglas and Marjorie married in 1960 and created a beautiful family with four children; Linda, Diane, Kathy and Eric.
Much time was spent on the family farm with Brother Barry, Auntie Arlette, Vicky, Michelle and Randy. Doug loved to shed his suit, and assist with the harvest. He ensured that his children grew up enjoying the farm life and knowing the difference between a combine and a tractor!
Doug and Marj took trips to many different countries. He found it unimaginable that a farm boy from Portage la Prairie would find himself in far away countries enjoying a beer with people from all over the world. He appreciated the opportunity to travel but home was always his favorite place.
For all his success at school and work, there was nowhere he shone more brightly than as a family man. He was unwavering in his love for his wife, children and grandchildren. No one could ask for a better, more loving husband, father and grandfather.
Douglas will be missed greatly by his wife, Marjorie (nee Gottfred); his children, Linda (Glenn), Diane (Murray), Kathy (Dale), and Eric (Johannie); his grandchildren, Andrew, Daniel (Rui), Micheal, Jeremy (Jessica), Kristine (Dean), Nicole (Alex), Julie; and great grandchild, June.
Cremation has taken place and a small family service has been held.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Parkinson Canada, or the MCA Sunshine Fund.
