With profound sadness, the Branton family announces the peaceful passing of Caleb Douglas Branton (Doug) of Lewin’s Cove, on January 30, 2024, at the age of 86, at the Burin Peninsula Health Care Center.
Doug leaves behind a devoted and loving family. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, who stood by his side for over six decades and their children: Sharon, Glenn (Juanita), Gail (Todd), Denise, and Patsy (Michael). Doug’s legacy continues through his grandchildren: Kayley, Sarah, Mark, Evan, Ashley, Jared, and Morgan, along with ten great-grandchildren and one more on the way.
In addition to his immediate family, Doug is survived by his siblings Leslie, Eric (Jocelyn), Florence (Brendan), and Harvey (Pauline). He is also lovingly remembered by his in-laws Keith (Doreen), Murray (Glenda), and Linda, plus a large circle of relatives and friends.
Doug is predeceased by his parents, Caleb and Sarah, as well as his parent-in-laws Mark and Alma Bolt. He is also preceded in death by his siblings Viola, Irene, Ray, and Eldridge, along with siblings-in-law Alice and Jim.
Doug’s life was filled with love, laughter and extraordinary moments that touched the hearts of all who were fortunate to know him right till the very end. In the early 60s, he met Marilyn in Thornlea, where she was teaching, leading to a beautiful marriage. Professionally, Doug worked for CN Rail before dedicating a significant part of his life to the engine room of CN Boats. His tireless work ethic and commitment led him to a well-deserved retirement in 1998.
Post-retirement, Doug embraced a life filled with purpose and joy. He thrived on visiting his children and tackling various maintenance projects, earning him the title of the family’s jack of all trades. A devoted family man, Doug found solace in the company of his loved ones, creating cherished memories during trips to Florida and visits to Alberta.
A man of many talents, Doug found immense joy in singing, cutting wood and camping. Sharing moments over his favourite indulgence – a Crown Royal and Diet Coke – was a special treat for those fortunate enough. If you knew Doug, you’d understand he was an avid hockey fan, particularly of the Chicago Blackhawks. To make him smile, all you had to do was mention how great that last game was.
The family would like to thank the staff at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital and the Burin Peninsula Health Care Center for the care and compassion they showed Doug and his family during the last two months.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 3, at 2pm at Wiseman’s Funeral Home in Burin. Cremation has taken place at Doug’s wishes. Should you wish to visit with the family, a visitation is scheduled from 12-2pm prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in the memory of Doug to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Funeral arrangements entrusted to the care of Wiseman’s Funeral Homes – Burin.
