It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved mother on January 3rd, 2023 at Vision Nursing Home, Sarnia.
Dorothy was born in Sarnia, Ontario on 25th of December, 1930 to Alfred and Elsie Bowd. She was a life-long resident of Sarnia. Dorothy was predeceased by her husbands, Raymond Joseph Alexander (2017) of 45 years, Kenneth Franklin Smith (1970) of 20 years, parents Alfred Bowd (1966) and Elsie (Forbes) Bowd (1999).
She was a wonderful and devoted mother to her two daughters – Laurie (David) Jensen and Cheryl (Chris) Johnston. She was strong willed and determined of which we will greatly miss.
Dorothy was switchboard/receptionist at Sarnia City Hall for 8 years before taking a position at Holmes Foundry. She was awarded the distinction of heroism for her contributions to the city during the 1953 tornado. She reentered the work force after her girls were older, working temporary positions at Polysar. Dorothy was one of the founders of “Christmas on Kim Street”, an annual craft show held at her home, and owner of the business “I-Deal Creations”. She was an avid sewer and over the years she successfully entered many sewing competitions. Computers became her interest in later years enabling her to complete genealogy books for the Bowd, Forbes and Smith families. Dorothy was treasurer of SCUG (Sarnia Computer Users Group) for 5 years before becoming president for another 4 years.
We will forever remember all the great Christmas, pool parties, fish fries, craft shows etc held at her beloved home on Kim Street. She also had four wonderful pets which she dotted on (Peppy, Zachary, Bailey and Rambo).
She loved to travel and was able to experience Europe, Australia, New Zealand and most of all the provinces/states in Canada and United States. Dorothy also had many friends in Florida where she spent a number of months and years there. She travelled to England a number of times for her research for her family history.
We would like to thank all the wonderful staff at Vision Nursing Home for all their wonderful care, support and love they bestowed our mother. She put them through the paces. Also, a special thanks to Corrine Pollard for all her guidance and professionalism in caring for our mother.
A funeral service will be held at Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia, on Sunday, January 8, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation held one hour prior from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow in Lakeview Cemetery.
Donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or to the Sarnia & District Humane Society would be appreciated (cheques only at the funeral home, please).
