We are saddened to announce the passing of Dorothy Hertzman, in Rehovot, Israel. Mother of Gadi, (Dorit), Judith Goffman and Carol.(z”l) {Pe’er David).
Dorothy is survived by 14 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. She leaves her first cousins, Gila Holzman (Toronto), Eleanor Kibrick (Ottawa), Arnold Kibrick (Lod); sister-in-law Rhona (Bernard) Blanshay in Montreal; as well as her nieces Cindy Chazan (Jay Liepzig) and Corinne Chazan (Michel), nephew Robert Blanshay and niece Linda Blanshay; along with many other nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was born in Montreal to Sarah (z»l) and Morris (z»l,l Chazan, and was the younger sister of Aaron (z»l) and sister-in-law of Libby (z»l) She attended Baron Byng High School. In 1955 she married Bernard Hertzman. For many years, Dorothy and Bernard had a pharmacy on Victoria Avenue that served the local community. Their three children were born in Montreal and attended Talmud Torah and Herzliah High School. Dorothy was always an active and caring voice in the school system, her synagogue, and the Jewish community, and had numerous friends and associates.
Gadi followed in his father’s footsteps and obtained a Pharmacy degree from the Université de Montréal. Judy graduated from Concordia in the Arts and is an accomplished writer and artist. Carol graduated from McGill in Microbiology and went on to excel internationally in scientific research.
Carol and Gadi moved to Israel in the 80’s and settled respectively in Rehovot and Jerusalem. Judy moved to the west coast of Canada in 1990. After an illness, Bernard passed away in 1997, and was buried in Israel.
In 2000 Dorothy followed her dream and moved to Israel. Until her health prevented it, Dorothy made a yearly trip to visit Judy and her two children, as well as the large family and many friends in Canada and the US. Dorothy remained close with her family near and far. She enjoyed a rich and meaningful life, living independently and being a loved and integral participant in the lives of all who knew her.
In 2022, Dorothy’s youngest daughter Carol passed away. She was devastated by this loss, but continued to act as a source of strength, insight, and wisdom for all of us. Dorothy will continue to inspire us well beyond her passing.
Dorothy is resting in Eretz Hachaim cemetery in Beit She’an, Israel, beside Bernard, her husband of 42 years.
