Our treasured family matriarch Dorothy passed away peacefully in her sleep on 2 October 2024, after a brief illness, and subsequent to the happy celebration of her 100th Birthday with family and friends on Saturday 14 September 2024 at her residence in The Wellington Retirement Home in Hamilton.
Dorothy was born on 19 September 1924 in Hamilton to Florence Mary Young (née Peace) (1891-1992) and Wilfrid Alexander Young (1894-1931). Dorothy was predeceased by her beloved husband Eric Andrew Antrobus (1922-1974) whom she married on 6 October 1951 in Hamilton, by her dearest brother Gordon Alexander Young (1920-1998), and by nephews Robert Andrew Young (Louise Gadbois) (1950-2017) and Donald Gordon Young (Maureen) (1954-2021). Dorothy leaves her loving son Andrew (Drew) Alexander Antrobus and loving daughter-inlaw Judith (Judy) Ildiko Smith, dear grandchildren Amanda Erica MacDonald (Logan) and Jason Tyler Antrobus (Bailey), cherished great grandchildren Callan and Brynn (MacDonald), and grateful nephews Nigel Harold Antrobus (Rosetta) and William Alexander Young (Penny). Caring grandnieces include Alicia Meagan Young and great great niece Mikella, and Louise Rose Antrobus (Py). Devoted grandnephews include Duncan Alexander Young (Kate) and great great nephew Griffinn, Stuart Nigel Antrobus (Leanne), Robert Andrew Antrobus (Ros), and James Daniel Antrobus (Lisa).
Dorothy lived her long and successful life entirely in Hamilton. After the early death of her husband Eric, Dorothy followed the example of her mother, and joined the workforce as an administrator with the Government of Ontario. She also visited with her mother, who lived to be 101 years of age, virtually daily. These two strong, independent women teased and laughed and traded stories, and were the best of friends. Dorothy gave constant caring attention to her extended family that typically included much contact by email and daily Zoom calls, was an active member of her church community, and in a remarkable example of continuity and loyalty, regularly had lunch with girlfriends from her kindergarten class. Dorothy never forgot a birthday, and her admiring family and friends always welcomed the arrival of a greeting card from their loving “Dorothy”.
The family wishes to thank the physicians and staff of the Juravinski Hospital in Hamilton for their compassionate care of our dear Dorothy during her final days, and for the timely and kind information provided to the family on Dorothy’s well being. The family also extends their gratitude to the staff of The Wellington Retirement Home in Hamilton for their valued support in creating a comfortable and happy home for Dorothy over the past three years.
Family and friends of Dorothy are cordially invited to a visitation at M.A. Clark and Sons Funeral Home at 567 Upper Wellington in Hamilton on Monday 7 October 2024 from 2 to 4 pm and from 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service, will be held at St. Andrew’s United Church 479 Upper Paradise on Tuesday 8 October 2024 at 11 am, followed by a reception. The interment will be private for family members. In lieu of flowers, donations to Wellington Retirement Home will be gratefully received
