Dorothea (Dot) Mary Smale (Hoffman) was wise beyond her years, yet forever young at heart, Snow White remained her favorite movie, for her 91 years of life. Gently, surrounded by family, Dot passed away at home Thursday, August 1st, 2024, after a long, exciting and challenging life. Daughter of Dr. Cecil Hoffman and Registered Nurse Marie Hoffman, who travelled up the Yangtze River to Chengtu, to help train the Chinese in medicine in 1932 and where Dorothea was born in 1933.
Dot has vivid memories of the 1930s in Chunking; one of those was constant runs for cover to a 1000-year-old cave to escape Japanese flying in formation above and bombing the area. There was the May 24th celebration for Queen Victoria’s birthday, as handsome British sailors resplendent in their immaculate white uniforms; were fascinating to Dot – age 5. Also her times frightening her Mom by climbing to the tops of huge banyan trees. Her daily life was spent with their Chinese helpers, so Mandarin became her 1st language, till the age of 4. She still remembers the swear words that they taught her as a joke, her father was not impressed. In 1935 Dot welcomed a new play mate; her sister Beverly.
In 1940 after a year (furlough) in Canada, the family travelled back to China by boat, which took 3 weeks. Her Mom, Marie, became friends with the wife of Eric Liddell (Chariots of Fire fame) and their children on board the boat. A side trip in 1945, over “The Hump” into India with her Mom and her sister Bev, was forced on them. They travelled when all women and children were ordered out of China due the invading Japanese threat. After their time in Chengtu China, Dot travelled by train up to school in the Himalayans’ where she could see Mount Everest.
Then onto Tzeliutsing – the salt capital of China, where her Dad operated and ran three hospitals and taught medical students. Marie taught the nurses and with other missionaries, taught their own children through home schooling, as there were no schools. Again, there were frequent bombings of churches, homes and finally Dad’s hospital. This hospital was then rebuilt by her Grandpa, Dr. A.C. Hoffman in 1946.
On her own, leaving her family in China, Dot returned back to Canada at age 13 for high school in Markham, on Vaughan Rd., Toronto and finally in St Catharines. While attending high school, Dot learned of the birth of her brother John in China; she would get to meet him in 1948. Dot then went on to graduate as a R.N. Toronto Western Hospital in 1955.
Onto a different exciting, and hectic life Dot married Ted Smale in 1953, while he was still at University of Toronto as an engineer and playing varsity football. Eventually moving the growing family to Ottawa for Ted’s work at Atomic Energy of Canada. Ted simultaneously worked and played professional football, under Frank Clair, with the Ottawa Rough Riders.
Dot nursed at two Ottawa area hospitals, the Civic and the Queensway-Carleton which allowed her a 40+ years in nursing. She was at the Civic Hospital when C.P.R. first came in. She also worked at a nursing home and for two family doctors Dr. Dardick and Dr. Cohen, as a practicing nurse and office manager.
Four wonderful offspring resulted from Ted and Dot’s marriage; Doug (Karen); Dawne (Gary); Karen (Jim) and Randy (Lorraine). These kids made life very exciting, hectic and with never a dull moment. New adventures took place in 1965, as one of the first ten “pioneers” moving to Kanata, settling on Tiffany Place, in Beaverbrook. Also in 1965, Ted moved with his employment, AECL to March Road, which marked the start of Canada’s largest technology park.
The Smale children attended great schools and enjoyed marvellous adventures in the Alice Wilson Woods & at the Beaver Pond. Dot volunteered 25 wonderful years with the Kanata-Beaverbrook Community Association performing duties; including membership drives, and planning community events, like Mayfair. Dot also had several years with the Heart and Stroke Foundation, organizing and performing canvassing drives. Dot always said she had the privilege to work with the best volunteers ever. On April 22, 2014, Dot received a Community Award for her volunteer services in Kanata, by the City of Ottawa.
Then along came the grandchildren and great-grandchildren who adored their Grandma and Great Grandma. Dot had extreme pride of the 10 grandchildren’s and 9 great-grand children’s many achievements – grandchildren: Lisa, Amy (Jon), Corey, Jeremy (Mel), Heather, Megan (Colin), Rebecca (Shayne), Jessica, Jacob and Erin. Great-grandmother to special great grandchildren; Cassandra; Victoria; Erica; Kimberly; Abigail; Charlotte, Bennett, Jayden and Mila.
At Dot’s request there will be no funeral, however a Celebration of Life for all the wonderful memories of her 91 years of life and her 70 years with Ted, an exceptional family and so many good friends and acquaintances.
Dot as a long-time supporter of the Heart and Stroke Foundation; and a patient of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute; therefore her family requests all donations be directed there.

  1. Our deepest sympathy on the death of a lovely lady, supportive neighbour and friend. She was such a dedicated volunteer, much appreciated by the community. What an amazing background she had. We missed her bubbly personality when she and Ted moved from Tiffany Place. Shirlee and Jacques Viljoen
