Doris Lillian Stewart
June 4, 1921 –
June 13, 2024
Born in Trenton, Ontario, June 4, 1921, Doris Lillian Stewart (nee Heaslip), predeceased by her mother Olive Godfrey and father Clifford John Heaslip, predeceased by her sister Clara Lowe, widow of Alfred Albert Stewart, mother of Sharon Lee Haney (nee Stewart), grandmother of Warren and Tyler (Leslie), great grandmother to Dean, beloved aunt, great aunt and great great aunt to her many nieces and nephews in Ontario, Manitoba, British Columbia, England, dearly loved by many relatives in the United States, friend, colleague and neighbour, went home to be with our Lord, June 13, 2024, at the age of 103.
Mom touched many lives, as she journeyed through ten decades and three years. Part of the Greatest Generation, mom grew up in Trenton, Ontario and graduated from Trenton High School and Teachers College in Toronto. She completed many professional development courses and took Italian at the University of Toronto.
Mom volunteered in the war effort in Trenton. Her first teaching assignment was in a one room school house there. She met dad, who was stationed at the Trenton Air Base and they were married November 5, 1945.
When the war ended they moved to Toronto, where mom and dad started a new life together. Dad opened a business, Stewart-Woods Limited, and mom taught at Givins Sr. Public School, for the Toronto District School Board. She loved teaching.
When they bought their first home in Erindale, mom moved to Alan A. Martin Sr. Public School with the Peel District School Board, where she was teacher librarian for 17 years. All together she taught for over 35 years.
After dad passed away in 1988, mom commuted into to Toronto and ran his business for 9 years.
She was one of the founding members of Erindale Presbyterian Church. She taught Sunday School, chaired the senior’s group, organized art classes, carpet bowling and get togethers. Mom also volunteered in the gift shops at Trillium Hospital and Credit Valley Hospital. She was active as a volunteer for The Old Britannia School House.
Mom loved participating in many activities as a member of RWTO and RTO. Bridge was her passion.
She enjoyed her garden, her pool, her cats, her trips with dad to Jamaica, and at the age of 99 was still driving. Mom really enjoyed spending time with her family and her friends even it was just a hot cup of tea and a shortbread around her kitchen table.
We would like to thank her team from Nurse Next Door for their exceptional care at all levels over the past four years.
We will miss her presence in our lives. A pillar of strength, wisdom and love, she was indeed, in dad’s words «a good woman». She will remain in our hearts forever.
