Doris Doreen King Obituary
Doris Doreen King (Raztlaff) went to be with her Lord Jesus peacefully on February 11th, 2024, in Cochrane, Alberta, at the age of 87. She was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.
Doris was born on July 19th, 1936, at home, near Sunnyslope, Alberta, and grew up in a large family with six siblings. She had a happy childhood on the farm with her brother and sisters, with many chores and goings-on to keep them busy. She enjoyed school and social activities, most centered around church. She became a Christian at the age of 12 and her love for Jesus continued to blossom throughout her life. Doris graduated as a nurse from Calgary General Hospital in 1959 and worked at Three Hills Hospital for four years. While there, she met Larry King in 1961 and they were married in Linden, Alberta on September 1st, 1962. Together, they moved to Red Deer, Alberta in 1963 where their three children were born, and she became a stay-at-home mom. They lived there for five years before moving to Calgary, Alberta in 1968, then briefly to Edmonton, Alberta in 1969 and finally, to Nipawin, Saskatchewan in 1970, where they settled for the next ten years. There they enjoyed many years of friends, fishing, school activities, camping and the usual adventures of a growing family. 1980 brought much change for the King family. Larry joined his dad and three brothers west of The Pas, Manitoba to pursue a life of farming. During that time, at the age of forty-five, Doris went back to work casually nursing at St. Anthony’s General Hospital (The Pas Health Complex). She continued her work there for 15 years and was deeply enriched by the patient/nurse connection. She loved life on the farm, spending countless hours seeding, weeding, and picking. After 26 years spent in Manitoba, they retired from farming, and Alberta called them home to be closer to their children and grandchildren. They moved to Three Hills, Alberta in 2006 where they enjoyed many years together in their home.
Doris was a woman of many gifts and passions. She loved to sing and belonged to various ensembles and choirs over the years. Her family remembers her fondly working in her garden, cooking, and baking in her kitchen, and as a gracious host who welcomed many into her home. Her food was loved by all. She avidly enjoyed knitting, cross-stitch, and crochet. Doris was an active, beloved member of her spiritual and social communities. She enriched the lives of many people with her kindness, generosity, and compassion. She was kind-spirited, easy-going and had an infectious joy for life.
Doris is survived by: her husband Larry; her children, Alan (Michelle) and Daniel (Arla); son-in-law, Stephen Dyck; her beloved grandchildren, Robert (Amber), Tamara, Natashia, Jenifer (Kyle), Kay (Jason), Carmen (Johnathon), Jonathan, Delean (Greg), Seth (Kayla), Taeja (James) and Kai; and her treasured great-grandchildren, Skyler, Emily, Grace, Logan, Aiden, Sebastian, Eleanor, Wesley, Alyssa, Aubree, Sidney; and her brothers-in-law Irv and Nick.
Doris was predeceased by: her daughter Heather Dyck (King); her parents Samuel and Marie Ratzlaff (Braun); her stepmother, Margaret Ratzlaff (Thiessen); her brother Raymond; and sisters Lois, Verda (Emerson), Zelda Marie (Garth), Helen, and Susan.
A Funeral Service will be held in her honour on February 24th, 2024, at 2 o’clock in the afternoon at Linden Mennonite Brethren Church, 101 1st Avenue North, Linden Alberta following a private internment ceremony at Linden Cemetery. Doris will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who knew her.
